Medical Description
Trika 0.5 mg Tablet is a prescription medication mainly used to manage anxiety and panic disorders. The pharmacological component of this medication is called alprazolam.
Alprazolam belongs to the benzodiazepines or tranquillisers class of medications. Benzodiazepines act on the brain to produce calming, sedating effects, and hence, are used in the treatment of anxiety and panic disorders. Anxiety in daily life may not require any treatment. Trika Tab is used in generalised anxiety disorder when there are symptoms such as excessive sweating, raised heart rate, difficulty breathing, muscle ache, soreness, difficulty in concentrating, etc.
The side effects of Trika Tablet include change in bowel habits, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, and loss of coordination. Trika Tablet has a habit-forming tendency. It must be used only as prescribed by a medical professional.

Contraindications
- It is contraindicated in patients with known alprazolam or benzodiazepine hypersensitivity or known allergies to any components in this medication.
- It is contraindicated in patients with acute narrow-angle glaucoma.

Directions for Use
- Trika 0.5 mg Tablet should be taken as prescribed by the treating physician.
- For optimal pharmacological effects, it is recommended to take this medication on a regular schedule, i.e., at the same time every day.
- Swallow Trika Tablet as a whole. Do not chew, break, or crush this medicine.
- It is recommended to finish the full course of Trika Tablet as prescribed by your treating doctor.
- Abrupt stoppage of Trika 0.5 mg Tablet can cause withdrawal side effects. Consult your doctor before stopping this medication.
- Trika Tablet has habit-forming tendencies, hence it is recommended to follow the directions of your treating physician precisely and have regular follow-ups.
- Use cautiously in elderly patients.
- Use cautiously in patients who are at risk of falling.
- Use cautiously in debilitated patients.
Storage and disposal
Store in a cool and dry place away from direct light and moisture. Do not use the medicine after the expiration date. Keep the tablets away from children and pets. Do not flush the medication down the toilet. Dispose of it with biomedical waste only.
Dosage
Overdose
Depending on the ingested quantity of Trika 0.5 mg Tablet, the overdose can range from mild to severe. It also depends on what other recreational substances/medications were consumed in addition to alprazolam. The overdose causes excess CNS depression which can present as fainting, somnolence (excess sleepiness), impairment of motor functions – dizziness, poor coordination, muscle weakness, loss of balance, low blood pressure (hypotension), shallow breathing (hypoventilation), coma, death.
In case of overdose or suspected overdose, monitor respiration, blood pressure, pulse rate, and maintain an adequate airway. Intravenous fluids have to be administered. Rush the patient to a tertiary care centre with ICU facilities for further evaluation and treatment.
Missed a Dose
If you miss a dose of Trika 0.5 mg Tablet, it is advised to take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, it is recommended to skip the missed dose and go back to the regular schedule. Do not double the dose of the tablet. This medication has habit-forming potential and can also be misused/ abused. It is very important to carefully time and monitor the consumption of this medication.
Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Alprazolam belongs to the benzodiazepines or tranquillisers class of medications. Benzodiazepines primarily act on the brain pathways to increase the action of a chemical messenger, otherwise known as a neurotransmitter called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Alprazolam binds to the receptors of GABA in the brain, thereby increasing its activity. This neurotransmitter’s effects on the brain are inhibitory, and result in sedation, calming effects, muscle relaxation etc. These effects help manage anxiety and panic disorders in patients.
It is important to note that due to this mechanism of action, it can be habit-forming and has the potential to be misused. Careful monitoring while on this medication is required and necessary. It is also important to note that this medication should not be abruptly stopped as it may cause withdrawal effects in users, which may be serious.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Use of Trika 0.5 mg Tablet medication with opioids is contraindicated, as it may cause respiratory depression, coma and death.
- Taking Trika 0.5 mg Tablet with other CNS depressants like alcohol can also cause similar effects and present life-threatening adverse effects.
- Medications that are potent inhibitors of CYP3A can increase plasma concentrations of alprazolam, leading to increased side effects. Such medicines should not be used concomitantly. Examples include azole antifungals (ketoconazole), cimetidine, certain antidepressants (fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, and nefazodone), macrolide antibiotics (clarithromycin), seizure medications (carbamazepine, phenytoin), antihistamines, and muscle relaxants.
