Medical Description

Tossex Syrup is a cough medication. Cough helps remove irritants such as dust, mucous, allergens, bacteria, etc., to clear the airway and prevent infection. Managing the symptoms of dry cough in upper respiratory tract infections like the common cold and allergies are the primary uses of Tossex 100 ml Syrup. Tossex Syrup consists of two active components: chlorpheniramine and codeine. Chlorpheniramine belongs to the class of antihistamines, which helps in lowering allergy reactions. Codeine is a narcotic cough suppressant. The mode of action of Tossex 100 ml Syrup is by blocking the signals responsible for the stimulus that causes cough. This syrup can cause a few side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, etc. Try to drink plenty of water to help loosen the mucus and prevent dehydration. Causing decreased sweating and increasing the chances of a heat stroke is one of the side effects of Tossex 100 ml Syrup. This medicine is not recommended for children. Avoid taking this medicine with other medications that also cause drowsiness. It is a habit-forming medicine and can result in dependency. Suddenly stopping this syrup can cause withdrawal symptoms such as sweating, increased heart rate, irritation, etc.

Uses

  • As per CDSCO, Tossex syrup is used in the management of dry cough in conditions such as colds or allergies.

Contraindications

  • If you have an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients of Tossex Syrup.
  • If you have a cough related to Chronic Smoking.
  • If you cough with mucus, this syrup is ineffective in clearing the mucus.
  • If you have chronic respiratory conditions like Emphysema (collapsing of the lung, causing shortness of breath) or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, etc.
  • If you have a history of medicine dependency.
  • If you have severe stomach or intestinal blockage.
  • If you have respiratory depression (slow and steady decline of respiration).
  • Note - It is better not to give this syrup to children or adolescents below 17 years of age without consulting a doctor, as it contains codeine, an opioid medicine, contraindicated in children.
