Medical Description

Tobracef injection is a combination antibiotic used for serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It contains ceftazidime, which stops bacteria from building a protective outer layer, and tobramycin, which blocks protein production needed for bacterial growth. Together, these medicines can treat certain severe respiratory, urinary or bloodstream infections when selected by a clinician. Tobracef injection is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic and must not be self-injected.

Uses

  • Serious bacterial infections: Ceftazidime and tobramycin kill susceptible bacteria that can cause severe illness and require treatment under medical supervision.
  • Serious respiratory infections: The combination may be selected for severe bacterial infections affecting the lungs when testing supports its use.
  • Urinary or bloodstream infections: The combination may be used for serious bacterial infections in the urinary system or bloodstream when the bacteria are susceptible.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use it if you have had a severe allergic reaction to ceftazidime, another cephalosporin antibiotic, tobramycin or a related aminoglycoside antibiotic. Side effects

  • Nausea or vomiting: These symptoms can occur during treatment and may make it hard to keep fluids down; tell the healthcare team if they persist.
  • Stomach pain or diarrhoea: Irritation of the digestive system may cause cramping or loose stools; report severe pain or signs of dehydration.
  • Ear ringing or hearing changes: Tobramycin may affect the inner ear, causing ringing or muffled hearing; report any change promptly to the healthcare team.
  • Vertigo or balance trouble: Inner-ear effects may cause spinning or unsteadiness; sit down to prevent falls and tell the healthcare team promptly.
  • Allergic reaction or reduced kidney function: A rash may signal allergy, while reduced urine can signal a kidney problem; get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much can cause kidney problems, hearing or balance problems and muscle weakness. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The ceftazidime component blocks formation of the protective covering around bacteria, causing susceptible bacteria to break down. The tobramycin component prevents bacteria from making essential proteins, so they cannot grow or survive. Together, these actions treat certain serious bacterial infections, but they do not treat viral illnesses such as common colds or flu.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Tobracef injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, other aminoglycoside antibiotics, vancomycin, certain water tablets, some cancer medicines and strong anti-inflammatory medicines may increase kidney or hearing problems. Muscle-relaxing medicines may increase weakness or breathing problems.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known. Tell your doctor if you are receiving intravenous fluids or have been advised to restrict fluids.
