Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. The doctor will balance the need to control the infection with pregnancy safety and may arrange extra monitoring.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. The medicine and the infection may require a personalised feeding plan.

Driving

Driving

Dizziness can occur. Do not drive or use machinery until you know that you can do so safely.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid heavy alcohol use because it can increase liver stress and worsen side effects.

Directions for Use

Swallow the tablet whole with sufficient water, with or without food as advised. Take it regularly at the time recommended by your doctor and do not stop it without medical guidance, especially if you also have hepatitis B.

Storage and disposal

Store in the original container, tightly closed, in a dry place away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Return unused tablets to a pharmacy for safe disposal.

Quick Tips

  • Keep every follow-up visit and laboratory check arranged by your doctor.
  • Use protection during sex and do not share needles or items that may carry blood.
  • Report reduced urine, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, or severe stomach symptoms promptly.
  • Do not stop treatment without specialist advice, especially if you also have hepatitis B.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose requires observation for side effects and monitoring of kidney and liver function. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

This is long-term antiviral treatment, so contact your care team if doses are missed repeatedly. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide block a viral enzyme needed to copy the virus's genetic material. This lowers the amount of virus in the body but does not remove the infection completely.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way this medicine works or increase kidney problems. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take. In particular, if you are taking medicines that affect kidney function, certain seizure medicines, rifamycin antibiotics, St John's wort, or another product containing emtricitabine or tenofovir.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is established. Avoid heavy alcohol use because it can worsen liver problems and make it harder to follow treatment safely.
