Medical Description

T-Cycline HC eye ointment is used for certain bacterial eye infections that cause redness, swelling, soreness or other inflammation. It contains a combination of tetracycline, an antibiotic that slows bacterial growth, and hydrocortisone acetate, a steroid that calms inflammation. Tetracycline acts on the infection, while hydrocortisone reduces inflammatory symptoms around the eye. The ointment is applied inside the lower eyelid of the affected eye and is for external use only. Use it for the period prescribed by an eye specialist, because steroid-containing eye treatments are not suitable for every eye infection.

Uses

  • Bacterial eye infection with inflammation: It treats susceptible bacteria while easing redness, swelling and irritation around the eye when combined treatment is prescribed.
  • Blepharitis: Bacterial eyelid inflammation may cause crusting, soreness and swelling, which this ointment may help relieve when prescribed.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, tetracycline antibiotics or hydrocortisone, do not use it. Do not use T-Cycline HC for viral or fungal eye infections, including herpes simplex, chickenpox-related eye infection or fungal disease, unless an eye specialist advises it. Tell your specialist if you have an eye injury or raised eye pressure.

Side effects

  • Burning or stinging: The ointment can briefly irritate the eye after application. Seek advice if pain is severe or does not settle.
  • Eye irritation: Itching, redness or a gritty feeling may occur at the application site. Stop and contact your eye specialist if symptoms worsen.
  • Blurred vision: The ointment film can temporarily blur sight. Do not drive until vision is clear.
  • Allergic reaction: Swelling of the face, lips or throat or breathing difficulty requires emergency medical help immediately.
