Medical Description

Spasmonil Plus tablet contains Dicyclomine and Mefenamic acid. It is an antispasmodic medicine used to treat spasms and pain in the abdomen during or before menses. The medicine must not be used for more than 7 days. If the pain persists, consult the doctor. Take with food or after food. The medicine must not be given to children below 12 years of age. It is advisable to give them the paediatric formulations of the medicine.

Uses

It is used to relieve stomach cramps and pain during the menstrual cycle.

Contraindications

  • If you are allergic to Mefenamic acid, Dicyclomine or other ingredients of the medicine.
  • If you have inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal bleeding or obstruction in the intestine.
  • If you have kidney, liver or heart function problem.
  • If you have asthma or develop an asthmatic attack due to painkillers.
  • If you have difficulty in passing urine or obstruction in the bladder and kidney.
  • If you a condition of weakness in muscles.
  • If you have increased eye pressure.
  • It must not be used in infants below 6-months of age.
  • The medicine must not be used in the last trimester of pregnancy or are breastfeeding.
  • The medicine must not be used for managing pain before, during and after coronary bypass surgery.

Driving

  • You may experience fluid retention and high blood pressure. It must be used cautiously in patients with existing conditions.

  • You develop diarrhoea, skin reactions or overheating of the body after taking Spasmonil Plus Tablet.
  • You have an existing liver and kidney function problem or bleeding disorder of the stomach or the intestine.

  • You have a prostate-related disorder, ulcerative colitis and megacolon.
  • Women suffer from infertility with the use of medicine. Avoid the medicine if you are planning to conceive.
  • You experience related brain disorders like confusion, hallucinations, tiredness or aggression.
  • There is a risk of heart-related disorder, heart failure and stroke after prolonged use of the medicine. It must be used cautiously in patients with the risk of heart disorder.

Directions for Use

  • Swallow as a whole with a sufficient amount of water.
  • Take the medicine with or after food as instructed by the physician.

Overdose

The symptoms of an overdose of Spasmonil Plus Tablet include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, rarely diarrhoea, excitation, coma, drowsiness, ringing sound in ears, fainting, occasionally fits or convulsions. In case of an overdose, contact the doctor or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

Avoid taking a double dose to compensate for the missed one. If you have missed taking a dose, take the next dose as soon as you remember.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

  • Spasmonil Plus Tablet acts via the combined action of Mefenamic acid and Dicyclomine.
  • Mefenamic acid inhibits the production of prostaglandin by blocking an enzyme responsible for prostaglandin synthesis. Prostaglandin is an inflammatory mediator that is implicated in conditions of pain, swelling and inflammatory responses.
  • Dicyclomine acts via two mechanisms. It is an antispasmodic agent that acts on smooth muscles of the uterus, urethra, intestine and bile duct and helps to relieve pain.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Certain medicines affect the way Spasmonil plus tablet works and Spasmonil plus tablet itself affects the action of certain medicines when taken together.
  • When taken along with medicines like blood thinners, pain killers, antidiabetic medicines, antibiotics, immune suppressant medicines, etc.
  • If you are using medicines to treat a medical condition like high blood pressure, heart failure, bacterial or fungal infections, bleeding disorders, etc.
  • Spasmonil Plus Tablet must not be taken for 8 to 12 days after taking a medicine called Mifepristone.
