Medical Description

Spasmex tablet is a combination medicine used to relieve abdominal pain and cramps linked with biliary colic, intestinal colic, renal colic and painful periods. It contains dicyclomine, which relaxes tightened muscles in the stomach and intestines, and paracetamol, a pain reliever that reduces pain signals. The two ingredients address both spasms and the pain associated with them. Spasmex tablet is taken by mouth with or without food as advised and should be used only for the diagnosed condition.

Uses

  • Biliary colic: Spasms affecting the bile ducts can cause severe abdominal pain; dicyclomine relaxes smooth muscle while paracetamol helps reduce the associated pain.
  • Intestinal colic: Sudden tightening of the bowel can cause cramping and bloating; this combination helps relax the muscles and relieve related pain.
  • Renal colic: Pain from spasms in the urinary tract may be eased by the pain-relieving and antispasmodic actions when prescribed.
  • Painful periods: Menstrual cramps can cause lower abdominal pain; paracetamol reduces pain while dicyclomine may ease associated cramping.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Spasmex tablet. Do not use it if you have blockage of the stomach or intestine, severe ulcerative bowel disease, glaucoma, difficulty passing urine or a very fast heartbeat unless a doctor advises it. Tell your doctor before use if you have liver or kidney disease.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Paracetamol or dicyclomine can upset the stomach, especially when treatment begins. Seek care if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down.
  • Dry mouth: Dicyclomine can reduce saliva, leaving the mouth sticky or making swallowing uncomfortable. Sip water and seek help if swallowing becomes difficult.
  • Blurred vision: Dicyclomine can temporarily affect focusing. Do not drive, and seek advice promptly if vision changes are severe or persistent.
  • Weakness: The combination may make you feel unusually weak or unsteady. Sit down safely and seek medical advice if weakness is severe.
  • Nervousness: Dicyclomine can sometimes cause restlessness or nervous feelings. Tell your doctor if this is troublesome or occurs with confusion.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use Spasmex tablet during pregnancy unless your doctor decides that the expected benefit outweighs the possible risk. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Spasmex tablet is generally not recommended while breastfeeding unless your doctor considers it necessary. Ask for advice before using it.

Driving

Driving

Spasmex tablet may cause dizziness, blurred vision, weakness or sleepiness. Do not drive, cycle or operate machinery if any of these effects occur.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Do not drink alcohol while using Spasmex tablet. Alcohol can increase sleepiness and may increase the risk of paracetamol-related harm.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Do not chew, crush or break the tablet. Spasmex tablet may be taken with or without food, but take it consistently as advised by your doctor. Do not use more paracetamol-containing medicine at the same time unless your doctor approves it.

Storage and disposal

Store Spasmex tablets in a cool, dry place away from direct light and moisture. Keep the pack closed and out of reach of children. Do not use tablets after the expiry date. Dispose of unused medicine according to local guidance.

Quick Tips

  • Do not take another paracetamol-containing product with Spasmex tablet unless your doctor confirms that it is suitable.
  • Avoid driving until you know whether this medicine causes dizziness, blurred vision or sleepiness.
  • Take the tablet whole with sufficient water and do not change the advised duration yourself.
  • Seek urgent care for yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe vomiting, confusion or worsening abdominal pain.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much may cause severe sleepiness, confusion, vomiting, blurred vision, difficulty passing urine or serious paracetamol poisoning, which may initially have few symptoms. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

In the digestive tract, dicyclomine relaxes smooth muscles and reduces sudden contractions that cause cramps and colic. The paracetamol ingredient reduces the production of chemical messengers involved in pain and fever. Together, the ingredients address both muscle spasm and the pain it causes.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Spasmex tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention other paracetamol-containing medicines, medicines that cause sleepiness, medicines for stomach or bowel spasms, medicines that affect bladder emptying, glaucoma medicines, blood thinners and treatment for liver disease. Other paracetamol-containing medicines increase poisoning risk, while blood thinners may increase bleeding risk.

Interactions with food items

Avoid alcohol while using Spasmex tablet because it can increase drowsiness and may add stress to the liver when combined with paracetamol.
