Medical Description

Sinarest Syrup is used in the treatment of symptoms of the common cold in children aged 2 to 12 years. Give this medicine to your child exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Before starting Sinarest syrup, inform your doctor about your child's complete medical history. Taking more than the daily dose of Sinarest syrup may cause serious liver damage or allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, mouth and throat, difficulty in breathing, itching and rashes.

According to the advisory issued by the Union Health Ministry, cough and cold medications should not be prescribed or dispensed to children under two years of age. Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

  • Sinarest syrup contains a combination of paracetamol, chlorpheniramine, phenylephrine and sodium citrate as active substances.
  • Paracetamol is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID) that blocks the action of a chemical called cyclooxygenase. Cyclooxygenase is responsible for the formation of certain substances in the body called prostaglandins that cause fever, pain and inflammation.
  • Chlorpheniramine is an anti-allergic medicine that blocks certain proteins in the body that are responsible for causing itching, headache, redness of the skin, low blood pressure and pain.
  • Phenylephrine is a nasal decongestant. It works by reducing the swelling of blood vessels of nasal passage by constricting the blood vessels and thereby relieving nasal congestion or blockage.
  • Sodium citrate liquifies the mucous and helps in its expulsion thereby clearing congestion.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Some medicines can affect the way Sinarest syrup works or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
  • Inform your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbals your child is currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
  • Particular care should be taken if your child is taking medicines for treating blood clots (warfarin), heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (metoclopramide), ulcers (propantheline), depression (amitriptyline), pain (fentanyl), gout (probenecid), abnormal/high cholesterol (cholestyramine) and Parkinson's disease/depression (MAO inhibitors).
  • The risk of toxicity may be increased when Sinarest syrup is given with other medicines that may damage the liver or with medicines used for the management of fits/seizures.
