Medical Description

Sedorex syrup is a combination medicine used for temporary relief of a dry cough caused by throat irritation, sneezing or a runny nose. It contains chlorpheniramine maleate, which reduces histamine-related allergy symptoms, and dextromethorphan hydrobromide, which suppresses the cough reflex. Together, these ingredients can soothe throat irritation and reduce coughing linked with allergy symptoms. The syrup is taken by mouth for the period advised by a doctor and is intended for a dry cough, not a wet cough unless a clinician recommends it.

Uses

  • Dry cough: A non-productive cough can repeatedly irritate the throat; this syrup suppresses the cough reflex to provide temporary relief.
  • Allergy-related cough: Sneezing and a runny nose can trigger coughing; this syrup eases these symptoms while reducing the associated dry cough.

Tell your doctor before use if you have breathing problems, glaucoma, difficulty passing urine, seizures, or liver or kidney disease.

Side effects

  • Sleepiness: Chlorpheniramine can make you drowsy or less alert, especially soon after use. Avoid driving and seek urgent help if you are difficult to wake.
  • Dry mouth: The antihistamine can reduce saliva and leave your mouth sticky. Sip water, and seek advice if swallowing becomes difficult.
  • Nausea: Either ingredient may upset the stomach. Seek medical help if nausea becomes severe or you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Dizziness: Dextromethorphan or chlorpheniramine may affect balance. Sit safely, avoid driving, and report severe dizziness or faintness.
  • Serious allergic reaction: Rash, facial swelling, throat tightness or breathing difficulty needs emergency medical help, not routine advice.

Shake well before use. Use the measuring cup supplied with the pack and do not drink directly from the bottle. Take Sedorex syrup by mouth, with or without food, exactly as advised by your doctor. Do not use it for a wet cough unless your doctor recommends it.

Storage and disposal

Store Sedorex syrup in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date, and ask a pharmacist how to dispose of unused syrup.

Quick Tips

  • Use the measuring cup supplied with the pack rather than a household spoon.
  • Drink enough fluids unless your doctor has restricted them.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel sleepy, dizzy or have blurred vision.
  • Do not combine Sedorex syrup with alcohol or another cough and cold product without medical advice.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose may cause severe sleepiness, agitation, vomiting, fast or irregular heartbeat, blurred or double vision, difficulty passing urine, hallucinations, seizures or slowed breathing. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Chlorpheniramine maleate blocks the effects of histamine, a body chemical involved in sneezing and a runny nose. Dextromethorphan hydrobromide reduces activity in the part of the brain that triggers coughing. Together, they reduce allergy-related symptoms and settle a dry cough.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Sedorex syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell them about monoamine oxidase inhibitor medicines, antidepressants, medicines that cause sleepiness, medicines for breathing problems, and medicines that make it difficult to pass urine. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors and some antidepressants can cause serious reactions with dextromethorphan, while sedating medicines can increase sleepiness and slowed breathing.

Interactions with food items

Avoid alcohol because it can greatly increase sleepiness, dizziness and slowed breathing caused by Sedorex syrup.
