Medical Description

Rubiclav 500/ tablet is a combination antibiotic medicine used to treat certain bacterial infections. It contains amoxycillin, which damages the protective covering of susceptible bacteria, clavulanic acid, which helps amoxycillin work against resistance enzymes, and lactobacillus, a probiotic added to support the balance of helpful intestinal bacteria during treatment. The antibiotic components act on susceptible bacteria, while lactobacillus may help restore healthy gut bacteria disturbed by antibiotics. Rubiclav tablet is swallowed whole by mouth with water, with or without food as advised, and does not treat viral illnesses such as common colds.

Uses

  • Bacterial infections: Rubiclav tablet treats susceptible bacterial infections at the body site identified by a doctor.
  • Healthy gut bacteria support: Lactobacillus may help restore helpful intestinal bacteria that antibiotics can disturb, but it does not replace antibiotic treatment for the infection.

Do not use Rubiclav tablet if you have previously had a serious reaction to penicillin or related antibiotics, or if this combination previously caused jaundice or serious liver problems. Tell your doctor about glandular fever, liver disease or kidney disease before treatment.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid may irritate the stomach, especially without food. Taking the tablet with a meal may improve comfort if your doctor permits it.

  • Hives: Raised itchy welts may indicate an allergy to a penicillin-related ingredient. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort or unusual urine changes may occur after taking too much. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The amoxycillin component prevents susceptible bacteria from building a protective outer covering, causing them to die. Clavulanic acid blocks bacterial enzymes that can break down amoxycillin, so the antibiotic remains active against more suitable bacteria. Lactobacillus may help restore the balance of helpful gut bacteria during antibiotic treatment.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Rubiclav tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell them about warfarin and other blood thinners, methotrexate, gout medicines such as probenecid, other antibiotics and hormonal contraceptives. Warfarin may increase bleeding risk, probenecid may increase amoxycillin exposure, and vomiting or diarrhoea may reduce the reliability of oral contraceptives.

Interactions with food items

Taking Rubiclav tablet with food may reduce stomach upset. No specific food interaction is known. Drink sufficient fluids unless your doctor has restricted them.
