Medical Description

Ritovir capsule is used with other antiviral medicines to manage human immunodeficiency virus infection and to boost selected antiviral medicines. It contains ritonavir, which blocks a viral protein-cutting enzyme needed to make infectious new virus particles. It also slows the body's breakdown of some antiviral medicines, helping them stay in the blood longer and work more effectively. The capsule is swallowed by mouth with food as part of a complete treatment plan and does not remove the infection from the body.

Uses

  • Human immunodeficiency virus infection: This medicine forms part of combination treatment that lowers the amount of virus in the blood and helps protect the immune system.
  • Antiviral treatment boosting: Ritonavir slows the breakdown of selected antiviral medicines, helping them remain in the body longer and work more effectively.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not take it. Do not use it with medicines known to cause dangerous heart rhythm changes, extreme sedation or severe medicine toxicity unless a specialist has checked the combination. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, diabetes, bleeding problems, heart rhythm disorders or pancreatitis.

Side effects

  • Nausea or vomiting: Ritonavir can upset the digestive system, especially when treatment starts. Taking it with food may help, but seek care if you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Diarrhoea: Loose stools can lead to fluid loss during treatment. Drink suitable fluids and contact your doctor if diarrhoea is severe or persistent.
  • Taste change: Food may taste metallic or unusual while using ritonavir. Tell your doctor if this prevents normal eating or drinking.
  • Tingling: Numbness or pins-and-needles in the hands or feet may occur. Tell your doctor if it becomes painful, worsens or affects walking.
  • Tiredness or joint pain: Ritonavir may cause unusual fatigue or aching joints. Seek advice if weakness is severe or comes with yellow skin or dark urine.

Dosage

Overdose

An excessive amount may cause severe nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness or dangerous effects from interactions with other medicines. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Ritonavir blocks a viral enzyme called protease, which the virus needs to form infectious new particles. It also slows the body's breakdown of some other antiviral medicines, increasing their levels and helping them work for longer. This reduces viral multiplication but does not remove the infection from the body.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Ritovir works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention cholesterol medicines such as simvastatin or atorvastatin, heart rhythm medicines such as amiodarone or flecainide, sedatives such as diazepam or alprazolam, epilepsy medicines such as carbamazepine or phenytoin, certain antibiotics such as clarithromycin or erythromycin, blood thinners, medicines for erectile problems, tuberculosis treatments and St John's wort. Ritonavir can raise the levels and effects of several medicines, certain antibiotics can increase ritonavir levels, while some epilepsy medicines can lower ritonavir levels and reduce its effect.

Interactions with food items

Take Ritovir with food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset. Avoid alcohol because it may worsen digestive and liver-related problems.
