The antibiotic gentamicin stops susceptible bacteria from growing, while dexamethasone is a steroid that reduces redness, swelling and itching. The drops are applied only to the affected eye or ear as prescribed and are not suitable for every red, painful or irritated eye or ear. They should be used only after a doctor confirms that a bacterial infection is present.
