Medical Description

Pulmoclear Tablet is used in long-term chest conditions where thick, sticky mucus is hard to clear and the airways are also narrowed, including chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma with heavy secretions, and bronchiectasis.

It contains acetylcysteine and acebrophylline, addressing two problems that occur together. Acetylcysteine breaks the chemical bonds holding mucus together, making it thinner and easier to cough up. Acebrophylline widens the airways and reduces the production of thick secretions.

Take it with or just after food and plenty of water, since thinning mucus depends on adequate hydration and a mucolytic works poorly in someone who is dehydrated.

Your cough may become more productive at first; this means the mucus is loosening rather than that the medicine is failing. The sulphurous smell of acetylcysteine is harmless.

This does not replace a reliever or preventer inhaler. Keep caffeine moderate, as the xanthine component adds to restlessness and palpitations, and tell your doctor about stomach ulcer, heart disease or thyroid problems.

Uses

Pulmoclear Tablet is used in adults for the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

  • You have problems with your liver or kidneys.
  • You have an overactive thyroid gland.
  • You have an ulcer in your stomach or intestines.
  • You have asthma or fits.
  • You suffer from any viral infection.

Directions for Use

Pulmoclear Tablet should be taken as directed by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole with a glass of water, do not cut, break or chew the medicine. It would be best if you take it at a fixed time for optimal results. Do not consume it more than that prescribed by your doctor.

Storage and disposal

  • Store Pulmoclear Tablets in a cool and dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture and heat.
  • Keep it away from children and pets.
  • Discard any unused medicine properly, do not flush in the toilet or throw it into the drain.

Quick Tips

  • Pulmoclear Tablet thins thick mucus and widens the airways at the same time, so secretions can actually be cleared.
  • Drink plenty of water; a mucolytic works poorly if you are dehydrated.
  • Take it with or just after food to reduce nausea and heartburn.
  • A more productive cough in the first days means the mucus is loosening, not that the medicine is failing.
  • The sulphurous smell of acetylcysteine is harmless and does not mean the medicine has spoiled.
  • Do not take a cough suppressant alongside it; loosened mucus needs to be coughed up.
  • Keep coffee, tea and energy drinks moderate, as the xanthine component adds to palpitations and restlessness.
  • Avoid the last dose late at night, as it can disturb sleep.
  • This does not replace your reliever or preventer inhaler; continue both as prescribed.
  • Tell your doctor when an antibiotic is prescribed, as some need separating by about two hours.
  • Report worsening breathlessness or discoloured sputum, which may indicate infection.
  • Stop smoking; it thickens mucus, damages the cilia that clear it, and speeds the breakdown of this medicine.

Dosage

Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose may include nausea, vomiting (often severe), stomach pain, diarrhoea, restlessness, fits, fast heartbeats. Seek medical attention in case you have consumed too much Pulmoclear Tablet.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed taking any dose of the Pulmoclear Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

  • Pulmoclear Tablet works by the combined action of Acetylcysteine and Acebrophylline.
  • Acebrophylline act by relaxing the smooth muscles of airways and induces the release of pulmonary surfactants which helps in clearing the congestion.
  • Acetylcysteine works by breaking down and loosening the thick phlegm, making it runny and easy to cough up, thus clearing the airway.

Interactions

Interactions with other drugs

Interactions with food items

  • Take Pulmoclear Tablet with or just after food, which reduces the nausea and heartburn both components can cause.
  • Drink plenty of water through the day. This matters more than with most medicines: a mucolytic works by thinning secretions, and dehydration directly undermines that, so good hydration is part of the treatment.
  • Keep caffeine moderate. Coffee, tea, cola, chocolate and energy drinks belong to the same chemical family as the xanthine component and can add to restlessness, tremor, palpitations and disturbed sleep.
  • Avoid alcohol, which irritates the stomach, worsens sleep disturbance and dehydrates you.
  • Take the last dose earlier in the evening rather than at bedtime, as the xanthine component can keep you awake.
  • The sulphurous taste of acetylcysteine bothers many people; taking the tablet promptly with a full glass of cold water, or following it with a strongly flavoured drink, makes it easier.
