Molecule Description

Ciprofloxacin is a prescription antibiotic that belongs to a class of medicines called fluoroquinolones. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections by stopping the growth of harmful bacteria in the body. It is used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs), respiratory infections (like pneumonia or bronchitis), skin infections, bone and joint infections, gastrointestinal infections (such as typhoid fever or traveler’s diarrhea), and certain sexually transmitted infections. It can also be used to prevent or treat anthrax exposure. It works by targeting and blocking the enzymes bacteria need to reproduce and repair themselves—essentially stopping them from multiplying. It attacks the bacteria from the inside, helping your body’s immune system eliminate the infection faster. Because it only fights bacterial infections, it won’t work for viral illnesses such as the flu or common cold. Common side effects of ciprofloxacin include nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, or trouble sleeping. Some people may experience mild joint or muscle pain. These effects are usually temporary, but if they persist or worsen, inform your doctor. Avoid alcohol while taking ciprofloxacin, as it may increase dizziness or stomach irritation. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery if you feel lightheaded. Ciprofloxacin can sometimes increase the risk of tendon swelling or rupture, especially in older adults or those taking steroid medications. Inform your doctor if you have heart rhythm problems, liver or kidney disease, epilepsy, or a history of tendon issues. Also, avoid taking ciprofloxacin along with antacids, multivitamins, or iron/zinc supplements within 2 hours before or after the dose, as they can interfere with how the medicine works.
