Medical Description

Practin capsule consists of 4mg of cyproheptadine, which belongs to an antihistamine class of medicine. It is used to treat various allergic conditions such as rashes, coughs, watery eyes, sneezing, runny or clogged noses, etc. It is also used to treat allergic skin reactions like hives caused due to cold temperatures and for blood transfusion-related life-threatening allergic reactions after it has been brought under control.

  • Allergic skin conditions like urticaria, angioedema or dermatographism

  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitor therapy
  • Angle-closure glaucoma
  • Gastric outlet obstruction (stenosis) due to peptic ulcer
  • Bladder neck obstruction
  • Prostatic hypertrophy
  • Pyloroduodenal obstruction
  • Weak elderly patients

Directions for Use

Practin capsules should be taken by mouth. Usually, it can be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Do not chew the Practin capsule. Please take this medicine with or without food simultaneously as advised by your doctor.

How Does It Work?

Cyproheptadine in the Practin capsules prevents the release of histamine, which causes allergic symptoms such as itchiness, runny nose, and skin rash. The medicine binds to the receptor sites of histamines in the white blood cells and prevents their release. Cyproheptadine is also an anti-serotonin medication that reduces serotonin levels in the body.

Interactions with other medicines

  • MAO inhibitors may extend and intensify the effect of cyproheptadine
  • Administration of cyproheptadine with CNS depressants like hypnotics, sedatives, tranquillisers, antianxiety agents may increase the effect of cyproheptadine
