Medical Description

Phenykem syrup is an anti-seizure medicine used to control epilepsy and recurring seizures. It contains phenytoin, which reduces excessive electrical activity in brain cells. This can help prevent uncontrolled jerking, loss of awareness and other seizure symptoms, but it does not remove the underlying cause. The syrup is shaken, measured and taken by mouth with or without food as advised, and a doctor may use it alone or with other seizure medicines. Use it regularly and do not stop it suddenly, because seizures can return or become more frequent.

Uses

  • Epilepsy and seizures: Phenykem syrup reduces abnormal brain activity to help prevent recurring seizures, including loss of awareness and uncontrolled movements.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, phenytoin or related hydantoin medicines, do not use it. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease or a previous severe skin reaction to phenytoin or a related medicine. Do not stop Phenykem syrup suddenly without medical advice.

Side effects

  • Sleepiness or dizziness: Phenytoin can slow alertness and make you feel unsteady, especially after a treatment change. Avoid driving and sit down if you feel faint.
  • Poor coordination or abnormal movements: The medicine can make walking or other movements clumsy. Use support and tell your doctor if this affects safety.
  • Slurred speech: Phenytoin can affect speech control when its level is too high. Report new or worsening slurring promptly.
  • Confusion: Phenytoin may cause confusion or reduced awareness. Seek urgent medical help if confusion is severe or comes with unusual behaviour.
  • Involuntary eye movements: Side-to-side or jerky eye movements can occur with phenytoin. Stop activities requiring clear vision and contact your doctor if they persist.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Phenykem syrup may harm an unborn baby. Do not use it during pregnancy unless your specialist decides it is necessary. Speak to your doctor before planning pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Phenytoin can pass into breast milk. Ask your doctor whether breastfeeding is suitable and watch the baby for unusual sleepiness, poor feeding or rash.

Driving

Driving

Phenykem syrup may cause sleepiness, dizziness, visual changes or poor coordination. Do not drive or operate machinery if affected.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol because it may increase sleepiness and dizziness and may affect seizure control.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack and take Phenykem syrup by mouth. Do not drink from the bottle. It may be taken with or without food, but use it consistently in relation to meals. Do not stop suddenly or change the amount without medical advice.

Storage and disposal

Store Phenykem syrup in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of children's reach. Do not use it after expiry. Dispose of unused medicine according to local guidance.

Quick Tips

  • Shake Phenykem syrup before measuring it.
  • Use the measuring device supplied with the pack.
  • Take it consistently in relation to meals.
  • Do not stop Phenykem syrup suddenly.
  • Keep a regular medicine schedule to reduce missed doses.
  • Wear medical identification if advised for epilepsy care.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much Phenykem syrup can cause severe sleepiness, confusion, slurred speech, unsteady walking or abnormal eye movements. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Phenytoin reduces excessive electrical signals that spread through nerve cells in the brain. By calming this abnormal activity, it helps prevent seizures but does not cure the underlying cause of epilepsy.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Phenykem syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, acenocoumarol can have an altered blood-thinning effect; acetazolamide and cimetidine can raise phenytoin levels; and phenytoin can reduce the effects of irinotecan, ulipristal acetate and hormonal contraceptives. Antacids and some tube-feeding products can reduce phenytoin absorption. Other seizure medicines and herbal supplements also need review.

Interactions with food items

Use Phenykem syrup consistently in relation to meals. Tell your doctor about nutritional supplements because they may affect phenytoin absorption or levels.
