Medical Description

Pefcin infusion is an antibiotic used for selected serious bacterial infections when treatment through a vein is prescribed. It contains pefloxacin, a fluoroquinolone medicine that acts against susceptible bacteria. Pefloxacin blocks bacterial enzymes needed to copy and repair their genetic material, so the bacteria cannot continue multiplying. The infusion is given slowly into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Its use depends on the infection and medical assessment, and it does not treat viral illnesses such as colds or flu.

Uses

  • Serious bacterial infections: Pefcin infusion is used for selected infections caused by susceptible bacteria when a doctor decides treatment through a vein is needed.
  • Urinary tract infections: It may be used for bacterial infections affecting the urinary system when the organism is susceptible and hospital treatment is appropriate.
  • Respiratory tract infections: It may be used for selected bacterial infections of the lungs or airways when prescribed after medical assessment.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine or to another fluoroquinolone antibiotic, do not use it. Do not use it if you previously developed tendon problems after a fluoroquinolone. Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, kidney or liver disease, heart rhythm problems, a history of aneurysm, or a condition causing muscle weakness.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Pefloxacin can irritate the stomach and make you feel sick. Seek help if you cannot keep fluids down.

  • Headache: Pefloxacin may cause head pain during treatment. Obtain medical advice if the headache is severe, unusual or persistent.
  • Dizziness: This infusion may affect balance or alertness. Sit down if you feel faint and avoid driving until you feel normal.
  • Injection-site reaction: Pain, redness or swelling may occur where the infusion enters the vein. Tell the nurse if the area becomes increasingly painful.

Storage and disposal

Pefcin infusion will be stored and handled by the hospital or clinic. Do not keep or reuse an opened infusion container. Keep all medicines away from children.

Quick Tips

  • Tell the healthcare team about any previous reaction to fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
  • Drink enough fluids unless your doctor has restricted them.
  • Stop strenuous exercise and report tendon pain or swelling promptly.
  • Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, face swelling or a widespread rash.
  • Report numbness, tingling, severe diarrhoea or palpitations without delay.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Pefloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics. It blocks bacterial enzymes needed for copying and repairing genetic material. This prevents susceptible bacteria from multiplying and allows the infection to clear.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Pefcin infusion works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention medicines that affect heart rhythm, medicines for seizures, blood thinners, medicines for diabetes, corticosteroids, and antacids or mineral supplements containing iron, calcium, magnesium or aluminium. These medicines may alter treatment or increase side effects, so the healthcare team may need to review them.
