Medical Description
Paxonil Ls is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of Depression, Anxiety disorder and Panic disorders (sudden or unexpected attacks of extreme fear and worry). Depression is a mood disorder characterised by an episode of sadness, mood swings, loss of interest, hopelessness etc. At the same time, Anxiety disorder is characterised by episodes of excessive fear, worry and nervousness.
Paxonil Ls is a combination of two medicine Paroxetine and Clonazepam. This combination of medicine increases serotonin levels in the brain and reduces the nerve cells' abnormal activity in the brain. Serotonin is a natural chemical messenger responsible for controlling behavioural processes such as mood, fear, anger, appetite, memory etc.
The dose of Paxonil Ls should be taken as advised by your doctor. There are some side effects associated with this medicine, so it is advised to take it after the doctor’s consultation. This medicine may cause physical dependence if used for a long duration or in people who have a history of addiction. So, the dosage must be carefully monitored.

Contraindications
- If you are allergic to any components of Paxonil Ls, i.e. Paroxetine and Clonazepam.
- If you are taking antidepressant-like- Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs),
- If you are using other anti-anxiety or sedative medicines and antipsychotic medications.
- If you have an eye disorder like narrow-angle glaucoma.
- If you have liver or kidney disease.
- If you have respiratory issues.
- If you have a heart condition.
- If you are pregnant or a breastfeeding mother.

Directions for Use
- Take the Paxonil Ls exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
- Take Paxonil Ls with or without food or as prescribed, preferably at the same time every day.
- Take the Tablet as a whole orally with a full glass of water. Do not crush or chew this medicine.
- Do not take Paxonil Ls with other medications without consulting your doctor.
- Don’t stop taking Paxonil Ls suddenly, as it may lead to withdrawal side effects.
- Don’t exceed the dosage of Paxonil Ls on your own without consulting a doctor.
Storage and disposal
Store Paxonil Ls at room temperature in a cool and dry area, away from humidity and direct sunlight. Keep the medication away from children and pet animals in a locked cabin. Do not remove the medicine from its packing and store it within its original packaging.
Do not flush Paxonil Ls down into the toilet or throw them into the dustbin. Medicines disposed of in this manner may contaminate the environment. Properly dispose of this tablet when it is expired or no longer required. Contact local waste company for the disposal.
Dosage
Overdose
Overdose of Paxonil Ls can lead to toxicity or poisoning. It may cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, respiratory dysfunction, changes in heart rate, difficulty walking, convulsion and coma. If you experience these symptoms, seek emergency medical treatment or contact your doctor immediately.
Missed a Dose
If you have missed a dose of Paxonil Ls, take it as soon as you remember. If you remember missing a dose of this tablet when it's already time to take the next one, skip the missed dose and take the next Tablet. Do not take both doses together to compensate for the missing dose. If you keep missing the dose, regularly consult your doctor.
Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Paxonil Ls is a combination of two medicines containing Paroxetine (12.5 mg) and Clonazepam (0.25 mg). Paroxetine is an antidepressant. It belongs to the Selective Serotonin Re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) class of medicine. It works by preventing the reabsorption of serotonin by the nerve cells, resulting in an increased serotonin level in the brain. Increased serotonin levels directly improve mood and relieve anxiety and depression symptoms.
Clonazepam belongs to the class of benzodiazepine medicines. It works by increasing the action of a chemical messenger in the brain known as GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and it reduces the abnormal or excessive activity of nerve cells in the brain, which is responsible for its sedation properties.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Paxonil Ls interaction with MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) like Selegiline, Rasagiline, Isocarboxazid, and antidepressants, lithium, triptans, buspirone, amphetamines, tramadol, tryptophan, may cause serotonin syndrome. It is strictly contraindicated
- Paxonil Ls interaction with metoprolol can lead to excessive bradycardia (slow heart rate).
- Paxonil Ls interaction with antipsychotics (haloperidol, pimozide), antihistamines, tricyclic antidepressant-imipramine, desipramine can prolong QT interval on ECG and can alter heart rhythm.
- Paxonil Ls interaction with NSAIDs, Aspirin, and other medications increases bleeding risk.
- Paxonil Ls interaction with Herbal products like St john’s wort can lead to life-threatening side effects.
Interactions with food items
- Avoid consuming Paxonil Ls with cola drinks, chocolates and caffeine-containing food items like tea or coffee. It can result in serotonin syndrome (high levels of serotonin).
