Medical Description

Ovares A Capsule is a prescription medicine used in the management of female infertility, particularly in women with diminished ovarian reserve or a poor response to ovarian stimulation. It contains dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a naturally occurring precursor hormone, and folic acid, an essential B vitamin. DHEA is produced naturally by the adrenal glands and the ovaries, and levels decline with age. In women with diminished ovarian reserve, it is used before or alongside assisted reproductive treatment such as IVF or ICSI, with the aim of supporting follicular development and ovarian response. Current evidence for this benefit is limited and of low to moderate certainty, so Ovares A Capsule should be used only under the supervision of a fertility specialist. Folic acid is included because adequate folate levels before conception and in early pregnancy reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the developing baby. Ovares A Capsule is a prescription-only medicine. Do not self-medicate.

Uses

  • Management of female infertility associated with diminished ovarian reserve or poor ovarian response.
  • As an adjunct before or during assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures such as IVF or ICSI, when advised by a fertility specialist.
  • To support adequate folate levels before conception, which helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the developing baby.

Contraindications

  • Ovares A Capsule should not be taken if you:
  • Are allergic to dehydroepiandrosterone, folic acid or any other ingredient of Ovares A Capsule.
  • Are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Tell your doctor immediately if you conceive during treatment.
  • Are breastfeeding.
  • Have or have had a hormone-sensitive cancer, such as breast, ovarian, uterine or endometrial cancer.
  • Have undiagnosed abnormal vaginal or uterine bleeding.
  • Have severe liver disease.
  • Have untreated or severe endometriosis or uterine fibroids, as these conditions may be hormone sensitive.
  • Have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or another condition associated with high androgen levels, unless specifically advised by your specialist.

Side effects

  • Most side effects of Ovares A Capsule relate to the androgenic (male hormone) activity of DHEA. They are usually dose-related and often improve after treatment is stopped.
  • Common side effects:
  • Acne and oily skin
  • Unwanted hair growth on the face or body (hirsutism)
  • Thinning of scalp hair
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Mood changes, irritability or restlessness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Headache
  • Nausea or abdominal discomfort
  • Less common side effects:
  • Deepening or hoarseness of the voice, usually with prolonged use or higher doses
  • Increase in facial or body odour
  • Reduction in HDL (good) cholesterol
  • Increase in blood pressure
  • Tell your doctor promptly if you notice deepening of the voice, marked unwanted hair growth or scalp hair loss. These effects may not fully reverse if treatment is continued.
  • Seek medical attention immediately if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

No, you should not take Ovares A Capsules if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking Ovares A Capsule.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Ovares A Capsule is not recommended while breastfeeding. There is limited information on the safety of DHEA during breastfeeding, and hormone-containing products may pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before using Ovares A Capsule if you are breastfeeding.

Driving

Driving

Ovares A Capsule does not usually affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, some women experience mood changes, restlessness, headache or disturbed sleep. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel unwell, drowsy or unable to concentrate.

Alcohol

Alcohol

It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking Ovares A Capsule. Alcohol can affect liver function, which is involved in processing DHEA, and regular intake is associated with reduced fertility and poorer outcomes from assisted reproduction. Discuss alcohol use with your fertility specialist.

Other General Warnings

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You have or have had a hormone-sensitive cancer such as breast, ovarian, uterine or endometrial cancer, or have a strong family history of these.
  • You have endometriosis, uterine fibroids or unexplained vaginal bleeding.
  • You have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or already have high androgen levels, as DHEA may worsen symptoms such as acne, unwanted hair growth and irregular periods.
  • You have liver disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or raised cholesterol.
  • You have a history of depression, bipolar disorder or other mood disorders.
  • You have vitamin B12 deficiency, as folic acid can mask its blood changes while nerve damage continues to progress.
  • You develop deepening of the voice, marked unwanted hair growth or scalp hair loss. These androgenic effects may not fully reverse if treatment is continued.
  • You take part in competitive sport. DHEA is a prohibited substance under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code and may cause a positive drug test.
  • You think you may be pregnant, or you are planning to stop contraception.
  • Your doctor may monitor your hormone levels, liver function and cholesterol during treatment.
  • Do not use Ovares A Capsule for any condition other than that prescribed by your doctor, and do not share it with anyone else.

Directions for Use

  • Take Ovares A Capsule exactly as prescribed by your fertility specialist. Do not self-medicate.
  • Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not open, crush or chew it.
  • It may be taken with or after food to reduce stomach discomfort.
  • Treatment is usually started some weeks or months before an assisted reproduction cycle. Your specialist will decide the dose and duration based on your test results.
  • Take it at the same times each day, and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.
  • Tell your doctor as soon as you think you may be pregnant, as your treatment will need to be reviewed.

Storage and disposal

  • Store Ovares A Capsule in a cool, dry place below 30 degrees C, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Keep the capsules in the original strip and carton until use.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
  • Do not dispose of medicines in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer need.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking more than the prescribed dose of Ovares A Capsule may increase androgenic side effects such as acne, oily skin, unwanted hair growth, voice changes, mood disturbance and menstrual irregularity. Very high doses of folic acid may cause nausea, abdominal discomfort and sleep disturbance, and can mask an underlying vitamin B12 deficiency. If you or someone else has taken more than the prescribed dose, contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital immediately. Take the medicine pack with you.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a dose of Ovares A Capsule, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you miss several doses, tell your fertility specialist, as this may affect your treatment cycle.

Ingredients and Benefits

  • Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) 25 mg: A precursor hormone produced naturally by the adrenal glands and ovaries, whose levels fall with age. In women with diminished ovarian reserve it is used before assisted reproduction with the aim of supporting follicular development and ovarian response. Evidence of benefit is limited and of low to moderate certainty, so it should be used only under specialist supervision.
  • Folic Acid 1.5 mg: An essential B vitamin required for DNA synthesis and cell division. Adequate folate before conception and during early pregnancy significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, in the developing baby.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Tell your doctor about all medicines, supplements and herbal products you are taking or plan to take.
  • Particular care is needed with:
  • Oestrogens, hormone replacement therapy and hormonal contraceptives, as DHEA may add to their hormonal effects.
  • Aromatase inhibitors such as anastrozole and letrozole, and anti-oestrogens such as tamoxifen, as DHEA provides a substrate for oestrogen production and may reduce their effect.
  • Other androgen or testosterone preparations, which may increase androgenic side effects.
  • Corticosteroids, which may affect adrenal hormone balance.
  • Insulin and other antidiabetic medicines, as DHEA may affect blood sugar control.
  • Anticoagulants such as warfarin, as bleeding risk may be affected.
  • Antiepileptic medicines such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital and primidone, as folic acid may lower their blood levels and reduce seizure control.
  • Methotrexate, sulfasalazine and trimethoprim, which interfere with folate metabolism.
  • Medicines that affect the liver, as DHEA is processed by the liver.

Interactions with food items

  • No specific food interactions are established for Ovares A Capsule.
  • Taking the capsule with or after food may help reduce nausea or stomach discomfort.
  • Limit alcohol, as regular intake can affect liver function, hormone balance and fertility outcomes.

Other general Interactions

  • Tell your doctor before taking Ovares A Capsule if you have:
  • Any hormone-sensitive condition, including breast, ovarian or uterine cancer, endometriosis or uterine fibroids.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or existing high androgen levels.
  • Liver disease.
  • Diabetes, as blood sugar control may be affected.
  • Heart disease, high blood pressure or abnormal cholesterol levels.
  • A history of depression, bipolar disorder or other mood disorders, as DHEA may worsen mood symptoms.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency or pernicious anaemia, as folic acid can mask the blood changes of B12 deficiency while nerve damage continues to progress.
