Directions for Use

Obetohep 5mg is to be administered orally either empty stomach or after taking meal. Follow the doctor's advice regarding dosage. Do not break the tablet or chew it. Have it with a glass of water.

Storage and disposal

  • Obetohep 5mg needs no special storage and disposal conditions
  • Keep it away from excess moisture and direct sunlight
  • Store in a cool and dry place or drawer

Dosage

Overdose

Accidental intake of higher doses causes elevated levels of transaminase and bilirubin. It may also enhance the production of abdominal fluids which might lead to abdominal swelling and jaundice too. Consult your doctor immediately, in case you have administered higher doses to prevent further complications.

Missed a Dose

In case a dose of Obetohep 5mg is missed, try to have the next dose at specified time but do not take double dose to compensate the missed one.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Obetohep 5mg acts by promoting the action of farnesoid X receptor (FXR), categorised as bile acid receptor which leads to decrease in intracellular concentration of bile acid in liver cells.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Warfarin and Obtohep together may decrease the INR in patients.
  • Theophylline and tizanidine when taken together with Obtohep may have increased exposure.
  • Cholestyramine, colestipol and colesevelam may reduce efficacy of obeticholic acid if taken together.

Interactions with food items

Obetohep 5mg can be had with or without food as the presence of food in stomach does not alter the absorption of Obeticholic acid.

Other general Interactions

Co-administration of bile acid binding resins along with obeticholic acid is not advisable because the presence of bile acid binding resins reduces the efficacy of obeticholic acid. So to avoid this, both the medicines should be administered with a time gap of minimum 4 to 6 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Since sufficient data regarding the drug-drug interactions for Covid-19 vaccine is not available till date, so it is recommended to take the medicine after a time gap by consulting your doctor after receiving the shot.

Since it’s a film coated tablet it is recommended to be taken with normal water.

It is not recommended to break the tablet in half since it’s a film coated tablet which is meant to protect it from gastric acid. If Obetohep 5mg is broken into two pieces, the protection due to film will be lost and will cause gastric irritation.

It is better to consult the doctor for appropriate timing before administration. Follow the doctor's prescription advice.
