Medical Description

Natagen % Eye eye drop is an antifungal medicine used to treat fungal infections of the eye, including eyelid infection, conjunctivitis affecting the clear membrane over the white of the eye and keratitis affecting the cornea. Its active ingredient is natamycin, which acts on the membrane of fungal cells and stops them growing. This helps clear a diagnosed fungal infection but does not treat bacterial or viral eye infections. Natagen % Eye drops are applied directly to the affected eye with clean hands under the direction of an eye doctor.

Uses

  • Fungal blepharitis: Fungal infection of the eyelids can cause soreness, redness or irritation; natamycin helps control the fungus when diagnosed by an eye doctor.
  • Fungal conjunctivitis: Fungal infection of the eye surface can cause redness, watering and discomfort; Natagen % Eye drops help treat the infection.
  • Fungal keratitis: Fungal infection of the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, can threaten vision; natamycin is used under specialist eye care.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Use it only when an eye doctor has diagnosed or suspects a fungal eye infection, because it is not suitable for bacterial or viral eye infections. Tell your eye doctor about a serious eye injury or another eye condition before use.

Side effects

  • Eye irritation: Natamycin may briefly cause burning, stinging or discomfort after application. Avoid bright light and contact your doctor if irritation becomes severe.

  • Eye redness: The treated eye may look red during the early part of treatment. Seek review if redness or pain worsens.

Missed a Dose

If you miss an application, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one. Do not apply extra product to make up for it.

How does this medicine work?

The active ingredient, natamycin, binds to an important fat-like substance in the fungal cell membrane. This makes the membrane leaky and causes fungal cells to die. Bacteria and viruses do not have the same membrane target, so this medicine is not a general treatment for those infections.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Natagen % Eye drops works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention other eye drops or ointments, steroid eye medicines such as prednisolone, and antifungal medicines such as fluconazole taken by mouth or injection. These combinations may alter effects or increase side effects, so keep the interval between eye products advised by your doctor.
