Medical Description

Mucodex syrup is used for cough with mucus and related breathing discomfort, including chest tightness, wheezing or shortness of breath linked with narrowed airways. It contains a combination of bromhexine, guaifenesin and terbutaline. The bromhexine component thins mucus, guaifenesin makes phlegm less sticky, and terbutaline relaxes airway muscles so air can move more freely. These actions help clear secretions and make coughing more productive. Mucodex syrup is taken by mouth and should be used only as prescribed, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Uses

  • Cough with mucus: Thick phlegm can be difficult to clear; bromhexine and guaifenesin loosen it so coughing can remove secretions from the airways.
  • Wheezing and chest tightness: The terbutaline component relaxes narrowed airway muscles, which may ease wheezing and the feeling of a tight chest.
  • Shortness of breath linked with mucus: Clearing secretions and widening the airways may make breathing more comfortable during the treated illness.

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Tell your doctor before use if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, seizures, glaucoma, kidney disease or a history of low potassium. Do not use Mucodex syrup for unexplained breathing difficulty without medical assessment.

Side effects

  • Tremor: The terbutaline component can cause fine shaking of the hands, especially when treatment begins. Contact your doctor if it is severe or interferes with daily activities.

  • Nausea: Bromhexine or guaifenesin may upset the stomach and cause queasiness. Seek advice if nausea prevents eating or drinking.
  • Diarrhoea: This combination can alter bowel movements and cause loose stools. Maintain fluids if suitable and seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea.
  • Rash or itching: A new rash or itch may signal an allergic reaction. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use Mucodex syrup during pregnancy or if you are planning pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or may become pregnant.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Use Mucodex syrup during breastfeeding only if your doctor decides that the expected benefit outweighs the possible risk, because limited information suggests that it may pass into breast milk.

Driving

Driving

Mucodex may cause dizziness or other symptoms that affect alertness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel impaired.

Alcohol

Alcohol

The effect of alcohol with Mucodex is not well established. Avoid alcohol if it worsens dizziness, nausea or breathing symptoms.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack and take Mucodex syrup by mouth exactly as advised. Do not drink directly from the bottle. Mucodex syrup may be taken with or without food. Do not use it to treat sudden severe breathing difficulty unless your doctor specifically instructs you.

Storage and disposal

Store Mucodex syrup at room temperature away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the bottle closed and out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use it after the expiry date, and ask a pharmacist how to dispose of leftover syrup.

Quick Tips

  • Shake Mucodex syrup well and measure each amount with the supplied device.
  • Drink suitable fluids to help loosen mucus unless your doctor has restricted fluids.
  • Do not combine Mucodex syrup with another cough or breathing medicine without checking first.
  • Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or a very fast heartbeat.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much may cause marked tremor, fast or irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, headache or muscle cramps. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The bromhexine component thins and loosens thick mucus. The guaifenesin component makes phlegm less sticky so coughing can remove it more easily. The terbutaline component relaxes the muscles around the airways and widens them, helping air move in and out.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Mucodex syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, other bronchodilators or stimulant medicines may increase tremor and fast heartbeat; beta-blockers may reduce terbutaline's airway-opening effect; water tablets, steroid medicines and other medicines that lower potassium may increase heart rhythm problems; and medicines affecting heart rhythm or antidepressants may add to these effects.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known. Follow your doctor's advice and maintain suitable fluids unless you have been told to restrict them.
