Medical Description

Micrhogam Uf injection is an immunising injection used to prevent Rh (Rhesus) sensitisation in Rh-negative individuals. It contains human anti-D immunoglobulin, which stops your body from forming antibodies against Rh-positive blood cells.

Uses

  • Prevention of Rh sensitisation during pregnancy in Rh-negative women
  • Prevention of haemolytic disease of the newborn in future pregnancies
  • Use after miscarriage, abortion, or invasive procedures such as amniocentesis in Rh-negative women
  • Use after a mismatched transfusion of Rh-positive blood

Contraindications

If you are allergic to human immunoglobulin or any other ingredient in this medicine, do not use it. This medicine is only for use in Rh-negative individuals; it should not be given to people who are Rh-positive or who are already sensitised with anti-D antibodies. Tell your doctor if you have IgA deficiency, bleeding disorders, or have had a previous allergic reaction to immunoglobulin products before using this medicine.

Side effects

  • Injection site pain
  • Local redness
  • Mild fever
  • Chills
  • Fatigue

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

This medicine is commonly given during pregnancy to Rh-negative women, typically around 28 weeks and again after delivery if the baby is Rh-positive. Your doctor will advise on timing based on your individual situation.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

This medicine is safe to use while breastfeeding, as it does not pass significantly into breast milk.

Driving

Driving

This medicine does not typically affect your ability to drive. However, if you experience dizziness or weakness, avoid driving.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No significant interaction with alcohol. However, consult your doctor if you have concerns.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse, usually into a muscle or a vein. Do not self-inject. Your doctor will determine the dose and timing based on your Rh status and the stage of your pregnancy or the type of exposure event.

Storage and disposal

This injection must be stored in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. It must not be frozen. Store in a dark place away from light. Keep out of reach of children. Disposal must be handled by the healthcare facility.

Quick Tips

  • This injection works best when given as soon as possible after a sensitising event, ideally within 72 hours
  • Your doctor will check your blood group and antibody status before deciding if you need this injection
  • Inform your doctor if you have a fever or acute illness before receiving this injection
  • Rest for a short time after receiving the injection
  • Report any signs of allergic reaction immediately

Dosage

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely since this medicine is administered by a trained healthcare professional. If an overdose is suspected, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

This injection is time-sensitive and works best when given within 72 hours of a sensitising event, such as delivery, miscarriage, or an invasive procedure during pregnancy. If a scheduled injection or a sensitising event was not reported to your doctor, contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

How does this medicine work?

This injection contains ready-made anti-D antibodies. If Rh-positive blood cells from your baby or from a transfusion enter your bloodstream, these antibodies clear them before your own immune system recognises them as foreign. This prevents you from developing your own antibodies against Rh-positive blood, which could otherwise harm an Rh-positive baby in a future pregnancy.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking. Live vaccines (such as MMR or chickenpox vaccine) should usually be delayed for about 3 months after this injection, as it may reduce their effectiveness. Your doctor will coordinate the timing of any vaccines.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Rh-negative women who are pregnant with, or have delivered, an Rh-positive baby usually need this injection. It may also be given after a miscarriage, abortion, invasive prenatal test, or a mismatched blood transfusion.
If you are Rh-negative, your doctor may recommend this injection during each pregnancy where there is a risk of your blood mixing with an Rh-positive baby's blood, since protection does not carry over automatically between pregnancies.
Without this injection, an Rh-negative mother exposed to Rh-positive blood may develop antibodies that can harm an Rh-positive baby in a future pregnancy. Your doctor can explain your specific risk and the benefits of this injection.
