Medical Description

Metacin 500mg tablets contain paracetamol as an active ingredient. It belongs to the analgesic/antipyretic (pain relief and fever control) class of medicines. This medicine relieves pain in form of headache, joint pain, body ache, flu-like symptoms, toothache, menstrual pain, backache, etc. Avoid taking the medicine if you are suffering from kidney and/or liver disease.

Contraindications

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Metacin tablet can be used during pregnancy if the doctor recommends it. Yet, it should be used for a short duration in low doses and should not be used too frequently by pregnant women.

Breast Feeding

Metacin tablet passes into the breastmilk in a small amount. It can be used during breastfeeding.

Driving

Metacin tablet in recommended doses is not known to interfere with the ability to drive. In case you feel high-headed or nauseatic after taking the medicine, avoid driving and rest.

Alcohol

The medicine may cause liver damage. In case of chronic alcoholics or excessive consumption of alcohol, caution is advised.

Talk to your doctor if

You are allergic to paracetamol.
You have a medical history of liver disease or regular use of alcohol.
You suffer from kidney disease.
You are using blood-thinning medicines.
You are using cholesterol-lowering medicines.
You are using medicines to treat fits.
Take antacids 2 hours before taking the medicine.

Directions for Use

The dosage of Metacin 500mg tablets is to be taken as directed by the doctor. Swallow as a whole with a glass of water. Do not break, crush or chew the tablet. Avoid using expired medicine.

Storage and disposal

Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Keep it away from children and pets. Dispose of the expired ones.

Individuals may experience side effects like nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, sweating, etc. More complications are profuse sweating, irritability, fits, coma, bleeding, low blood sugar. Missed a Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Avoid taking a double dose to compensate for the missed dose.

How Does It Work?

There are chemicals in the body called prostaglandins. The substances are released in response to illness or pain. It blocks the production of these prostaglandins, making the body less aware of fever or pain. The medicine acts on the area of the brain, which is responsible for controlling the temperature. Thus controls the fever.

Interactions with other medicines

Concomitant use of medicines used to treat nausea or vomitings like metoclopramide or domperidone and Metacin 500 mg must be avoided.
Medicines used to thin the blood like warfarin, must not be administered together with Metacin 500mg tablet.
Avoid taking Cholesterol-lowering medicines like cholestyramine, within one hour of taking Metacin 100mg tablets.
Medicines used for bacterial infection like chloramphenicol.
Medicines used to treat fits or brain-related disorders like carbamazepine and Metacin 500mg must be used cautiously.

Other general Interactions

Metacin tablet is not recommended for patients with chronic liver diseases.
