Medical Description

Loraxim Dry dry syrup is an antibiotic used to treat selected bacterial infections in children, including infections of the ear, throat, tonsils, sinuses, chest, lungs and urinary system. It contains cefixime, which stops bacteria from forming the protective cell wall they need to survive. This helps the child's immune system clear the infection. Loraxim Dry dry syrup is prepared and given by mouth under a doctor's direction, and it does not treat viral illnesses such as common cold or flu.

Uses

  • Middle ear infections: Cefixime helps clear susceptible bacterial infections of the middle ear and may reduce pain and pressure.
  • Throat and tonsil infections: The medicine treats selected bacterial infections of the throat or tonsils, easing painful swallowing and inflammation.
  • Sinus infections: Loraxim Dry dry syrup may treat a bacterial sinus infection when prescribed after medical assessment.
  • Chest and lung infections: It is used for susceptible bacterial bronchitis or pneumonia affecting the airways and lungs.
  • Urinary infections: Cefixime may treat bacterial infections of the bladder or urinary system when prescribed.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not give it. Do not give Loraxim Dry dry syrup to a child who has had a serious allergy to cefixime, another cephalosporin or a related penicillin medicine without medical advice. Tell the doctor if the child has kidney disease or a history of severe bowel inflammation.

Side effects

  • Diarrhoea: Cefixime may disturb normal bowel bacteria and cause loose stools; give fluids as advised and contact the doctor for severe or bloody diarrhoea.
  • Stomach upset: Nausea, vomiting or abdominal discomfort may occur as the medicine affects the digestive system; tell the child's doctor if fluids cannot be kept down.
  • Skin rash: A rash may be an allergy rather than a mild effect; stop the medicine and get emergency medical help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty.

Dosage

Overdose

Giving too much cefixime may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort or diarrhoea. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Cefixime prevents bacteria from forming a strong protective cell wall. Without this wall, the bacteria weaken and die, allowing the child's immune system to clear the infection. It works against certain bacteria and has no benefit for viral infections.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines
