Medical Description

Larprim oral drop is an antibiotic used for susceptible bacterial infections, including some infections of the urinary tract, middle ear and lungs, and for certain serious lung infections caused by Pneumocystis organisms under specialist care. It contains a combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim block two linked steps bacteria need to make folate, a nutrient required for growth, so susceptible bacteria cannot multiply normally. Larprim oral drop is given by mouth using the measuring device supplied with the pack and only as prescribed.

  • Urinary tract infections: Bacteria affecting the bladder or urinary passages can cause burning, urgency or fever; this medicine treats the infection when prescribed.
  • Middle-ear infections: Bacterial infection behind the eardrum can cause ear pain or fever; Larprim drops may be used when the bacteria are susceptible.
  • Respiratory infections: Some susceptible bacterial infections in the lungs or airways can cause cough, phlegm or fever; this medicine may be prescribed for treatment.
  • Bacterial prostatitis: Infection of the prostate can cause pelvic discomfort and difficult urination; this combination reaches prostate tissue and is prescribed when the bacteria are susceptible.
  • Pneumocystis lung infection: This serious infection can affect breathing, especially in people with weakened immunity; treatment requires specialist medical supervision.

How does this medicine work?

Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim are a combination that blocks two linked steps bacteria use to make folate, a nutrient they need to grow. Blocking both steps stops susceptible bacteria from multiplying, allowing the body's immune system to clear the infection.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Larprim works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, blood thinners such as warfarin may increase bleeding; medicines for diabetes may lower blood sugar more; potassium-raising medicines and certain water tablets may raise potassium; seizure medicines such as phenytoin may reach higher levels; transplant or other immune-suppressing medicines may increase kidney or blood problems; and medicines for irregular heartbeats may increase rhythm risk.
