Largactil 10 MG Description
Largactil treats schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders like paranoia (abnormal and false beliefs). It is also used in the symptomatic treatment of mania and hypomania (abnormal energised behavi
our). Schizophrenia is a mental illness characterised by inappropriate action and feelings, unusual thinking, withdrawal from reality. Bipolarity is a mental illness causing extreme mood swings. Further, Largactil helps to supplement therapy in anxiety, dangerous or violent behaviour, and agitation. The main ingredient in Largactil is Chlorpromazine. This medication acts on the brain and nerves. Largactil’s dose usually starts at a low dose and then gradually increases to the optimum dosage for the particular individual after close observation. If you feel the tablets are not working for you after 3-4 days of using the medication, consult your doctor for a dose re-evaluation but do not increase the dose by yourself.

Pregnancy

Can I take Largactil during pregnancy?

Largactil is not recommended during pregnancy as it can cause unfavourable effects to the newborn. Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant prior to treatment as Largactil may make it difficult for you to get pregnant as it reduces fertility (ability to get pregnant).
Breast Feeding

Can I take Largactil while breastfeeding?

It is not recommended to breastfeed when undergoing treatment with Largactil as small amounts of the medication may pass into the breast milk. Consult your doctor prior to breastfeeding.
Driving

Can I drive if I have taken Largactil?

Largactil may cause sleepiness, dizziness, light-headedness, decreased attentiveness or alertness in some people, especially elderly individuals. Do not drive if you are having such symptoms.
Alcohol

Can I consume alcohol with Largactil?

Do not consume alcohol while taking Largactil. Alcohol can potentially increase the effects of Largactil and result in significant breathing difficulties.

Mode of Action of Largactil 10 MG
How Does It Work?
The active ingredient chlorpromazine decreases the activity of the Central Nervous System. It inhibits a specific chemical messenger (Dopamine) and therefore stimulates the release of Prolactin (hormone). It works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain and other parts of the body.
Further, Largactil has properties that make it anti-emetic (prevents nausea and vomiting), antipruritic (prevents itching), anti-histamine (prevents allergic reaction), ganglion blocking activity (affects the heart) and analgesic (pain killer).
It also slows down the centre in the brain responsible for regulating body heat....
Directions for Use of Largactil 10 MG
- Take Largactil as directed by your doctor.
- Take the dose as directed.
- Do not increase or decrease the dose or stop taking the medication without discussing it with your doctor.
- Swallow the tablet with water.
Interactions of Largactil 10 MG
Interactions with other medicines
- Cancer treatment medications ( cabergoline) has an anti-dopamine effect and cancel out the effect.
- Antiparkinsonism medications (amantadine and bromocriptine) should not be used as they work against each other.
- Antidepressants (treat depression) such as imipramine or central nervous system stimulants, such as amphetamines can cause side effects such as urinary retention and breathing difficulty.
- Antacids or medication that treat indigestion and heartburn, such as magnesium, aluminium and calcium salts, oxides and hydroxides, when taken along with Largactil, can decrease absorption of Largactil. It should be given with at least a gap of 2 hours between each other....
- Cardiac medicines used to regulate heart rates such as amiodarone, disopyramide or quinidine, when used with Largactil, can increase the risk of further rhythm abnormalities.
- Medicines to control high blood pressure, such as ACE inhibitors (such as benazepril captopril) and calcium channel blockers (such as amlodipine and diltiazem), can cause increased effect of the medication and cause a significant drop in blood pressure. ...
- Anticonvulsants used to treat seizures such as carbamazepine, or phenobarbital can cause severe breathing difficulty.

Storage and disposal of Largactil 10 MG
Store the medication in a tightly closed box at room temperature in a dry place. Keep away from light. The medication should be stored out of reach and sight of children. Largactil should not be used after the expiry date, as mentioned on the box. Dispose of unused or expired medication in an environment-friendly manner. Do not dispose of in household waste or in household drains....
Dosage of Largactil 10 MG
Overdose
In case of an accidental overdose, get in touch with your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital. Carry the leftover tablets or boxes with you to ensure correct medicine identification. Overdose symptoms include excessive sleepiness, decreased blood pressure, increased heart rate, irregular heart rhythm, lower body temperature, or even passing out....
Missed a Dose
In case you have missed a dose, let it be and simply resume with your regular dosing schedule. Avoid making up for the missed dose by taking a double dose.

Q: Can Largactil treat ailing or weak elderly patients?
A: Largactil can be used to treat weak and ailing elderly patients with close dose monitoring and by starting them on a low dose (1/3-1/2 usual adult dose) with a slow increase in dose.
Q: Can Largactil be used in children?
A: Largactil can be used to treat children with dose adjustment based on age (for 6-12 years) and based on body weight (for 1-5 years). It is not recommended for use in children below the age of 1 unless specified by the physician for a critical condition.
Q: Can I get withdrawal symptoms, and if yes, how to prevent them?
A: Yes, you can get withdrawal symptoms after discontinuing the treatment. To prevent this, a gradual decrease of the medication is recommended. You should not stop taking the medication without your doctor’s advice.
