Medical Description

Lafjoy tablet is a medicine used to treat ulcers in the stomach or the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It helps reduce symptoms of acid reflux, where stomach acid keeps coming back up into the oesophagus (GERD), causing heartburn and irritation. It also heals and relieves irritation, swelling, small bleeds, or redness in the stomach lining caused by gastritis (stomach inflammation).

It works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach makes and protecting the stomach lining. It blocks special switches in the stomach called H₂ receptors that signal acid production and also increases natural protective substances in the stomach lining. This helps in healing the damaged areas and prevents further harm.

You should avoid taking this medicine if you are allergic to it or other similar medicines like ranitidine or famotidine. Do not take it if you have or may have a stomach tumour, as it can hide the symptoms. People with severe liver problems should only take it under close medical supervision. It is not recommended for children or teenagers, as its safety in this age group is not confirmed. Possible side effects include constipation, diarrhoea, rash, nausea or vomiting, and dizziness.

This medicine can interact with other medicines, so avoid taking it at the same time as antacids or sucralfate. Leave at least a 2-hour gap. It may interact with painkillers like ibuprofen, procainamide (for irregular heartbeats), theophylline (for asthma), ketoconazole (for fungal infections), and glipizide (for diabetes). Always let your doctor know if you take other prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, or homoeopathic medicines. Store it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, this medicine should only be used if your doctor thinks the benefits outweigh any risks. It is not known to affect your ability to drive, but avoid alcohol while taking it. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember with food, but skip it if it’s almost time for your next dose. Never double up on doses. If you take too much, contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital immediately.
