Medical Description

Jectocos S injection is used to treat iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia when a clinician decides iron replacement by injection is needed. It contains elemental iron, which replenishes iron stores used to make haemoglobin, the blood protein that carries oxygen. By supplying iron through a medically supervised injection, it supports production of healthy red blood cells when oral replacement is unsuitable, ineffective or not tolerated. Jectocos S injection is administered by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic and must not be self-injected.

Uses

  • Poor response to oral iron: When iron tablets are unsuitable, ineffective or not tolerated, this injection replenishes iron stores through supervised treatment.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not receive Jectocos S injection. Do not receive it for anaemia that is not caused by iron deficiency, if your body has excessive iron, or if it cannot use iron properly. Tell your doctor about any previous severe reaction to another iron medicine.

Side effects

  • Headache or dizziness: Iron given by injection may cause head pain or light-headedness during or after treatment. Sit or lie down and tell the nurse.

  • Stomach pain: The infusion can cause abdominal discomfort as the body responds to iron. Report severe or persistent pain to the healthcare professional.
  • Muscle, limb or joint pain: Aching can occur after iron treatment and may affect movement temporarily. Tell the doctor if pain is severe or continues.
  • Injection-site reaction or bleeding: Pain, swelling, redness, itching or bleeding may occur where the injection enters. Report worsening swelling or bleeding that does not stop.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. You will be observed during and after administration for an allergic reaction or other discomfort. Tell the healthcare professional immediately if you develop flushing, chest discomfort, dizziness, breathing difficulty or swelling. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Storage and disposal

Store Jectocos S injection below 25°C in a clean, dry place protected from moisture, sunlight and heat. Keep it out of reach of children. Do not use it if the liquid is discoloured or contains particles. A healthcare facility should dispose of opened or unused injection safely, without flushing it or pouring it into a drain.

Quick Tips

  • Tell the doctor if you have reacted badly to an iron injection before.
  • Remain under observation for the period advised after the injection.
  • Report dizziness, faintness, rash or breathing difficulty immediately during treatment.
  • Do not start oral iron or another iron injection without medical advice.
  • Eat iron-containing foods as part of a varied diet unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose is unlikely because Jectocos S injection is given by a healthcare professional. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Elemental iron supplies the raw material needed to make haemoglobin and other proteins involved in oxygen transport. Replenishing iron stores allows the bone marrow to produce healthier red blood cells. The injection supplies iron under medical supervision when treatment by mouth is not appropriate.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Jectocos S injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell your doctor if you use iron medicines taken by mouth or another iron preparation, because using them together can alter treatment. Do not restart oral iron until your doctor says it is appropriate after the injection.
