Medical Description

Immutil capsule is an immune-suppressing medicine used with other treatment to help prevent rejection after a kidney, heart or liver transplant. It contains mycophenolate mofetil, which reduces the growth of immune cells that can attack the transplanted organ. By lowering this immune response, it helps the transplant remain accepted, but it also reduces the body's ability to fight some infections. Immutil capsule is swallowed whole with water under transplant-specialist supervision, with regular follow-up and blood tests. It must not be used in pregnancy because mycophenolate can cause pregnancy loss and serious birth defects.

Uses

  • Organ rejection prevention: After transplantation, the immune system may attack the new organ; this medicine lowers that attack so the transplanted kidney, heart or liver can keep functioning.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use Immutil capsule during pregnancy because mycophenolate can cause pregnancy loss and serious birth defects. Tell your transplant specialist before use if you have an infection, blood disorder, stomach or bowel disease, or any unusual skin growth.

Side effects

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Mycophenolate mofetil is changed in the body to an active substance that blocks the growth of certain immune cells. This reduces the immune response that can damage a transplanted organ.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Immutil capsule works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, antacids and medicines that reduce stomach acid may lower mycophenolate absorption; some antiviral medicines and antibiotics may change mycophenolate exposure; other medicines that suppress immunity may increase infection risk; live vaccines may be unsafe or work less well; iron supplements may be absorbed differently and need review; and hormonal contraceptives may work less reliably. Ask your transplant team before changing any of these.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is established. Keep the food pattern consistent if your transplant team has advised this, and ask before making major dietary changes.
