Medical Description

HI tablet is a medicine used to reduce excess stomach acid in acidity, acid reflux and peptic ulcer disease. Its active ingredient is ilaprazole, an acid-lowering medicine that blocks acid-producing pumps in the stomach lining. By reducing acid, it eases heartburn and gives irritated areas in the food pipe or stomach lining time to heal. HI tablets are swallowed whole with water on an empty stomach before food, as advised by a doctor, and persistent or recurring symptoms need medical assessment.

Uses

  • Acidity and heartburn: Excess stomach acid can cause burning discomfort and sour fluid rising into the throat; this medicine lowers acid to relieve these symptoms.
  • Acid reflux disease: Repeated backflow of stomach contents can irritate the food pipe, and reducing acid controls symptoms and supports healing.
  • Stomach ulcers: Acid can delay healing of sores in the stomach lining; lowering acid gives the affected area time to recover.
  • Upper intestinal ulcers: Reduced acid supports healing of sores in the upper intestine and lowers further irritation.
  • Painkiller-related ulcer prevention: People who need certain painkillers for a prolonged period may be prescribed acid control to reduce ulcer risk.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Tell your doctor if you have severe liver disease or kidney disease. Get medical assessment before self-treating persistent symptoms, especially unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting, trouble swallowing, black stools, vomiting blood or chest pain.

Side effects

  • Headache: Headache can occur as your body adjusts to reduced stomach acid. Rest in a quiet place and seek advice if it is severe or does not settle.
  • Dizziness: Changes in alertness may cause dizziness during treatment. Sit down until it passes and do not drive if you feel unsteady.
  • Diarrhoea: Reduced stomach acid can alter digestion and bowel bacteria, sometimes causing loose stools. Contact your doctor if stools are severe, persistent or bloody.
  • Constipation: Some people develop harder or less frequent stools during acid-lowering treatment. Increase fluids if appropriate and seek advice for severe pain.
  • Nausea: Stomach adjustment to ilaprazole may cause queasiness. Report repeated vomiting or inability to keep fluids down.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Safety during pregnancy has not been established. Use HI only if your doctor decides that the expected benefit outweighs the possible risk.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

It is not known whether ilaprazole passes into breast milk. Ask your doctor whether to use HI while breastfeeding.

Driving

Driving

HI does not usually affect driving, but dizziness or sleepiness can occur. Do not drive if you feel affected.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol if it worsens heartburn or stomach irritation. Alcohol may increase acid-related symptoms.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Do not chew, crush or break the tablet. Take it on an empty stomach, usually before a meal, exactly as advised by your doctor. Do not continue long-term treatment without review.

Storage and disposal

Store HI in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not use damaged or expired tablets. Ask a pharmacist about safe disposal of unused tablets.

Quick Tips

  • Take HI before food as advised by your doctor.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water and do not crush it.
  • Eat smaller meals if large meals worsen your reflux.
  • Avoid lying down soon after eating if this triggers heartburn.
  • Seek medical advice for black stools, vomiting blood, trouble swallowing or unexplained weight loss.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much HI may cause headache, nausea, dizziness or stomach discomfort. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The ilaprazole component blocks acid-producing pumps in the stomach lining. This reduces the amount of acid released into the stomach, easing irritation from reflux and helping ulcers heal. Its effect is on acid production rather than directly neutralising acid already present.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way HI works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, acid-requiring medicines such as some antifungal medicines may be absorbed less well. Tell your doctor if you use methotrexate, medicines for human immunodeficiency virus infection, blood thinners, digoxin, tacrolimus, iron supplements or other acid-reducing medicines.

Interactions with food items

Take HI before food as advised. Large fatty meals, spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol can worsen reflux symptoms in some people, so avoid them if they trigger discomfort.
