• If you are allergic to metformin or acarbose or any other ingredients of Glucobay M tablet.
• If you have problems with your liver or kidney.
• If you are an alcoholic (you daily consume alcohol in excess).
• If you have uncontrolled diabetes.
• If you have any heart problems or if you recently had a heart attack.
• If you have a severe infection of the lung or kidney. Infections can increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
• If you have inflammation or ulcers in any part of the bowel or intestine (Ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease).
• If you have serious liver-related dysfunction or obstruction in the intestine.
• If you have a large hernia, increased gas in your intestine may worsen it.
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding a baby.

• Loss of appetite

Other General Warnings

• You are experiencing low blood sugar after taking this medicine.
• You are already taking any medicines such as anti-hypertensive medicines, anti-asthmatic medicines, steroids, NSAIDs or any other anti-diabetic medicines, etc.
• Administration of certain antacids should be monitored while taking this medicine.
• You may develop liver problems while taking this medicine. Regular monitoring of liver enzymes is recommended.
• You have lactic acidosis (an acid-base imbalance) characterized by difficulty in breathing, abdominal pain, muscle cramps and dehydration.
• You have altered kidney function.
• You have heart disease such as heart failure.
• You have a planned surgery.
• Glucobay M tablet should not be used by children below 10 years of age.

• Glucobay M tablet should be taken as directed by your doctor.
• Swallow it whole with a glass of water.
• It should be taken with or after a meal to reduce its side effects.
• It would be best if you took it at a fixed time for optimal results and should not consume it more than that prescribed by your doctor.

• Store this medicine below 25°C in a cool and dry place.
• Protect it from light and moisture.
• Keep the product out of reach and sight of children and pets.

How Does It Work?

• Glucobay M tablet works by the combined action of metformin and acarbose.
• Metformin works by decreasing the amount of glucose absorbed from the intestine, thereby lowering the production of glucose or sugar in the liver and increasing the absorption of sugar by the body cells from the blood.
• Acarbose works by reducing or slowing down the action of certain enzymes in the intestine and thereby reduces the breakdown of carbohydrates present in the food to simpler sugars and its release in the bloodstream. Therefore it helps in reducing post-meal sugar spikes.

Interactions with other medicines

• Sometimes Glucobay M tablet may affect the way other medicines work and other medicines may affect how Glucobay M tablet works, if taken at the same time.
• Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interactions.
• Especially, if you are on certain medications like oral contraceptives, anti-hypertensives (like captopril, verapamil), medicines used for thyroid disorders, anti-epileptic medicines like phenytoin, antacids, anti-tuberculosis medicines such as rifampicin, corticosteroids, etc.
• Caution is advised on the simultaneous use of these medicines during the treatment as it can affect the kidneys, especially in individuals who are suffering from kidney disorders.
• Medicines containing digestive enzymes and absorbents can reduce the effectiveness of Glucobay M tablet.
• Other medicines that should be used with caution are heart medicines like nifedipine and digoxin.
