Medical Description

Galirex syrup is an oral combination medicine used to relieve a dry cough and related nasal or eye allergy symptoms such as a blocked nose, sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. It contains dextromethorphan hydrobromide, which reduces the urge to cough, phenylephrine hydrochloride, which reduces swelling inside the nose, and cetirizine dihydrochloride, which eases histamine-related allergy symptoms. Together, these ingredients are intended for a cough with little or no mucus rather than a mucus-producing cough unless a doctor advises otherwise. Galirex syrup is shaken, measured with the supplied device and taken by mouth, with or without food as advised.

Uses

  • Dry cough: Reduces the urge to cough when the throat feels tickly or irritated and little or no mucus is produced.
  • Allergy-related nasal symptoms: Eases sneezing, a runny nose and watery eyes when airborne or seasonal allergens trigger these symptoms.
  • Nasal congestion: Phenylephrine reduces swelling inside the nose, which may make breathing through a blocked nose easier.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use Galirex syrup if you have severe kidney disease or if you have recently used a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, unless a doctor specifically confirms it is safe.

Side effects

  • Sleepiness: Cetirizine and dextromethorphan can reduce alertness, especially when first used. Do not drive if you feel drowsy.
  • Nausea or upset stomach: The combination may cause queasiness, vomiting or stomach discomfort. Seek medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Dry mouth: Reduced saliva can make the mouth sticky or cause thirst. Sip water, and seek help if swallowing becomes difficult.
  • Nervousness, restlessness or insomnia: Phenylephrine may make some people feel keyed up, restless or unable to sleep. Contact your doctor if it is severe.
  • Dizziness, headache or fatigue: Light-headedness, head pain or unusual tiredness may occur. Sit down if dizzy and avoid driving until alertness returns.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Galirex syrup is not usually recommended during pregnancy. Use it only if your doctor decides that the expected benefit justifies the possible risk.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

The ingredients may pass into breast milk and could harm the baby. Use Galirex syrup while breastfeeding only if your doctor considers it necessary.

Driving

Driving

Galirex syrup may cause sleepiness, dizziness or blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery if affected.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Do not drink alcohol while using Galirex syrup because it may worsen drowsiness and dizziness.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack and take Galirex syrup by mouth with or without food as advised. Do not drink directly from the bottle. Do not combine it with another cough, cold or allergy medicine unless a doctor confirms it is suitable.

Storage and disposal

Store Galirex syrup according to the conditions printed on the pack, keep the bottle closed and out of reach of children. Dispose of leftover or expired syrup according to local medicine-disposal advice.

Quick Tips

  • Use Galirex syrup only for a dry cough unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Measure each serving with the supplied device.
  • Avoid driving if you feel sleepy, dizzy or less alert.
  • Do not drink alcohol during treatment.
  • Warm fluids may soothe an irritated throat, but they do not replace medical care.

Dosage

Overdose

Excessive use may cause severe sleepiness, agitation, fast or irregular heartbeat, vomiting or breathing problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Dextromethorphan reduces the brain signals that trigger coughing. Phenylephrine narrows swollen blood vessels inside the nose, helping open blocked nasal passages. Cetirizine blocks the effects of histamine, a chemical involved in allergy symptoms, which reduces sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Galirex syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention monoamine oxidase inhibitors and antidepressants, because they can cause serious reactions with dextromethorphan; sedatives and sleeping medicines, because they can increase drowsiness; blood pressure medicines; and other cough, cold or allergy products, because duplicate ingredients or phenylephrine can increase side effects.

Interactions with food items

Alcohol can increase sleepiness, dizziness and reduced alertness with Galirex syrup. Avoid alcohol and tell your doctor about herbal products used for sleep or relaxation.
