Medical Description

Fra capsule is a nutritional medicine used to support iron and selected nutrient intake. It contains a combination of ferrous asparto glycinate, a form of iron, L-tyrosine, selenium and zinc. Iron supports haemoglobin and red blood cell formation, while zinc and selenium support normal body functions and L-tyrosine provides an amino acid used to make proteins and certain body chemicals. The capsule is taken by mouth and should complement, not replace, a varied, balanced diet.

Uses

  • Nutritional support for protein building: L-tyrosine supplies a building block the body uses to make proteins and other normal body chemicals.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Fra. Do not use it if you have iron overload or an anaemia not caused by low iron unless a doctor advises it. Ask your doctor before use if you have a blood disorder, thyroid disease, kidney or liver disease, or take another iron, zinc or selenium supplement.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Iron may irritate the stomach and cause queasiness, especially when the stomach is sensitive. Seek advice if vomiting prevents you from keeping the capsule down.
  • Constipation: Iron can make stools harder or less frequent. Increase fibre and fluids if suitable, and contact a clinician if there is severe pain or prolonged constipation.
  • Stomach upset: Mineral salts may cause abdominal discomfort or a metallic taste. Report persistent pain or vomiting for assessment.
  • Dark stools: Iron commonly makes stools darker. Seek urgent help if stools are black and tar-like or appear with weakness or abdominal pain.
  • Allergic reaction: Rash, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or breathing difficulty needs emergency medical help.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy before using Fra. Iron and other nutrients may be useful when needed, but the total amount from all supplements should be reviewed.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Your clinician can decide whether this combination is needed and whether another source of nutrients is more suitable.

Driving

Driving

Fra is not expected to affect driving. Do not drive if you feel dizzy or unwell after taking it.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific alcohol interaction is established. Heavy alcohol use can affect nutritional health, so discuss regular alcohol use with your doctor.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Use it only as advised by your doctor or nutrition professional. Do not crush or open the capsule unless instructed. Iron absorption can be affected by some foods and medicines, so follow the timing advice given by your pharmacist.

Storage and disposal

Store Fra in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct light. Keep it out of reach of children. Do not use damaged capsules or capsules past their expiry date. Dispose of unused capsules according to local pharmacist advice.

Quick Tips

  • Keep Fra out of reach of children because excess iron can be dangerous.
  • Tell your pharmacist about all supplements before starting this product.
  • Do not take it close to tea, coffee or calcium-rich foods unless advised otherwise.
  • Expect stools to become darker, but seek help for tar-like stools with pain or weakness.
  • Eat a varied diet that includes iron-containing foods where suitable.
  • Ask for medical advice if tiredness continues despite taking the supplement.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much of this medicine can cause severe stomach pain, vomiting, bloody stools, unusual weakness or drowsiness. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Ferrous asparto glycinate supplies iron for haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells. Zinc supports enzymes, immunity and tissue maintenance. Selenium supports antioxidant enzymes and normal thyroid function. L-tyrosine is used as a building block for proteins and certain body chemicals. Together, these nutrients add to dietary intake but do not replace diagnosis and treatment of an underlying deficiency.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Fra works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you take antacids or acid-reducing medicines, thyroid medicines, tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, bone-strengthening medicines, or other iron, zinc or selenium products. Antacids and acid reducers can lower iron absorption, while iron and zinc can reduce absorption of thyroid medicines and some antibiotics when taken close together.

Interactions with food items

Tea, coffee, milk and foods high in calcium can reduce iron absorption when taken close to the capsule. Follow your pharmacist's advice about timing. Do not use Fra as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet.
