Medical Description

Fingomod capsule contains fingolimod, an immune-modifying medicine used for selected relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis to reduce relapses and new inflammatory activity.

Uses

  • Relapsing multiple sclerosis
  • Reduction of multiple-sclerosis relapses

Contraindications

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to fingolimod or an ingredient. It is contraindicated with certain recent serious heart or brain circulation events, severe untreated sleep-related breathing problems, particular heart blocks or rhythm disorders, and medicines that can cause a dangerous abnormal rhythm. A neurologist and heart specialist must assess suitability.

Side effects

  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Cough
  • Blurred vision
  • Back pain

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use fingolimod during pregnancy. Use effective contraception during treatment and for the period specified after stopping, and contact the neurologist promptly if pregnancy occurs.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Breastfeeding is not recommended during fingolimod treatment because the medicine may pass into milk and could seriously affect the infant.

Driving

Driving

Dizziness, blurred vision, or slow heartbeat can make driving unsafe. Avoid driving until you know how this medicine affects you.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Alcohol may worsen dizziness and can make it harder to recognise infection or heart symptoms. Limit it and discuss use with your neurologist.

Directions for Use

Swallow the capsule whole with sufficient water as directed by the neurologist. Do not crush or chew it. Starting treatment and restarting after certain interruptions can require monitored heart rate and rhythm observation, so never restart it on your own.

Storage and disposal

Keep the capsules in the original blister pack in a cool, dry place away from direct light and moisture. Store them out of the reach of children and return expired capsules to a pharmacist.

Quick Tips

  • Attend the required heart monitoring when starting or restarting treatment.
  • Avoid live vaccines and report fever, infection, new weakness, confusion, vision change, or severe headache promptly.
  • Do not stop or restart without the neurologist because disease activity can return severely.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much may cause very slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, or vision changes. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a serving, contact your neurologist for advice, especially near the start of treatment. If told to resume later, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Fingolimod keeps certain immune cells in lymph tissue, reducing their movement into the brain and spinal cord. This can lower inflammation and new multiple-sclerosis activity.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can dangerously slow the heart, disturb heart rhythm, weaken immunity, or increase infection risk with fingolimod. Tell the neurologist about all medicines and vaccines, especially beta blockers, rhythm medicines, immune treatments, corticosteroids, and live vaccines.

Interactions with food items

The capsule may be taken with or without food as advised. Avoid live vaccines during treatment and for the period your neurologist specifies after stopping.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
