Medical Description

Estrofem tablet is an oestrogen replacement medicine used for symptoms caused by low oestrogen, including selected menopausal symptoms, when prescribed. It contains oestradiol, the main active form of the female hormone oestrogen. Oestradiol acts like natural oestrogen, supporting reproductive tissues, bone maintenance and other body functions affected by low hormone levels. Estrofem tablet is taken by mouth with water under medical supervision and is not suitable during pregnancy.

Uses

  • Menopausal symptoms: Low oestrogen can cause hot flushes, night sweats and related symptoms; oestradiol replacement may relieve them when prescribed.
  • Oestrogen deficiency: When the body produces too little oestrogen, this medicine restores hormone activity in selected treatment plans.
  • Bone loss after menopause: Oestrogen supports bone maintenance and may help reduce bone loss in selected people when other options are unsuitable.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use Estrofem tablet if you have or have had breast cancer, cancer of the womb lining, unexplained vaginal bleeding, a blood clot, a clotting disorder, a recent heart attack or stroke, or serious liver disease. Do not use it during pregnancy.

Side effects

  • Breast tenderness: Oestradiol can make breast tissue sore or swollen after treatment starts. Report a new lump or persistent breast change.

Dosage

Overdose

Excess oestradiol may cause nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, abdominal discomfort or vaginal bleeding. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Oestradiol acts like the body's natural oestrogen. It binds to oestrogen-sensitive cells and changes their activity, helping support reproductive tissues, hormone-related symptoms and bone maintenance.

Interactions

Some medicines can affect the way Estrofem tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention medicines for epilepsy, tuberculosis or human immunodeficiency virus infection, and herbal preparations containing St John's wort, because they may reduce or alter oestradiol effects.
