Medical Description

Epilive tablet is an anti-convulsant medicine. It contains levetiracetam as its active ingredient. It is used in the treatment of epilepsy. It helps control seizures in an individual with epilepsy. Epilepsy is a brain-related disorder that can result in abnormal brain activity, loss of consciousness, temporary abnormalities in muscle tone or movements (stiffness, twitching or limpness) and abnormal behaviours. Epilive tablet works by stabilizing the abnormal conduction of signals in the brain and help control these symptoms. You should take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor. It is also advised not to drive just after taking this medicine, as it may cause symptoms like sleepiness, dizziness and lack of coordination etc. You should tell the physician if you have a liver or kidney problem. You should also discuss your pregnancy or if you are a breastfeeding mother.

For the treatment of seizures in an individual with epilepsy.

If you are allergic to levetiracetam or any of the ingredients of Epilive tablets.

Pregnancy

It is not recommended to be used during pregnancy due to limited information available on its safety and its effect on the unborn baby. Take this medicine only if it is prescribed by your doctor. Inform your doctor if you are planning a pregnancy before initiating the treatment.

Breast Feeding

It is not recommended to take Epilive tablet if breastfeeding, as the effects of Epilive tablet on the new-born child are not known. However, if you are taking this medicine on your physician's advice during breastfeeding you should keep a close watch on the breastfed baby if any adverse effects appear, inform your doctor immediately.

Driving

You may experience sleepiness, tiredness, dizziness and lack of coordination, especially during the initiation of treatment. So it is advised not to drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You are getting thoughts of suicide or self-harm and behavioural changes.
  • You have a liver or kidney problem because in such health conditions dose adjustment is required.
  • You experience dizziness or drowsiness after taking this medicine.
  • You feel behavioural changes including psychotic symptoms, irritation, depression, anxiety or aggression. In such conditions, you may need close monitoring during the treatment.
  • You experience breathing problems and swelling of the skin. It may be required to discontinue the treatment immediately and also advised not to restart the medicine if such adverse reactions occur.
  • This medicine should be stopped gradually to avoid associated side effects. Abrupt withdrawal of this medicine may lead to increased frequency of fits or seizures and status epilepticus (a seizure that lasts for a longer duration than the usual seizure episodes).
  • It is advised to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you are confident enough about the effects of this medicine.

Directions for Use

  • Take this medicine as instructed by your doctor.
  • It should be swallowed as a whole with plenty of water. It should not be chewed or crushed.
  • Do not change your dose unless your doctor tells you to and never stop taking the medicine on your own.

Storage and disposal

  • Do not store this medicine above 25°C.
  • Store it in the original packaging to protect it from moisture.
  • Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include giddiness, fatigue, nausea, anxiety, double vision, slow heart rate and balance disorder. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine and experience any of such signs contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

It would be best if you take the doses at the appropriate time for the desired effect. If you have missed any dose of this medicine take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How Does It Work?

  • Seizures generally occur due to abnormal nerve activity in the brain resulting in uncontrolled movements, loss of consciousness and abnormal feelings.
  • Epilive tablet acts on the brain and inhibits the spread of abnormal electrical activity. It works by binding itself to synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A), a specific receptor in the brain and helps in stabilizing the neuronal disturbance in the brain which can cause seizures.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Certain medicines can affect the way Epilive tablet works or Epilive itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken along.
  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbals you are currently taking to avoid any possible interactions.
  • Especially if you are taking rifampicin - a medicine which is used to treat bacterial infections and St John’s wort (also known as Hypericum perforatum) - a herbal medicine used to treat mood disorders and anxiety as well as other conditions.

A sudden withdrawal of this medicine can cause serious problems and also may lead to an increase in the frequency of seizure or fits or attacks.Tell your doctor if you experience any unusual behaviour or thoughts of harming or killing yourself while taking this medicine.
