Medical Description

Elmox CV 200/ suspension is an oral antibiotic suspension used for bacterial infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, urinary tract, skin, teeth, joints and bones. It contains a combination of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid: amoxycillin stops bacteria from building their protective cell wall, while clavulanic acid blocks resistance enzymes that can weaken its action. The suspension is prepared and given by mouth, preferably with or after food, using the measuring device supplied with the pack. It is often prescribed for children, who should receive it only under medical supervision.

Uses

  • Bacterial ear, sinus and throat infections: These infections can cause pain, discharge or sore throat; amoxycillin kills susceptible bacteria and clavulanic acid helps it work against resistant strains.
  • Bacterial lung infections: The combination helps clear susceptible bacterial infections of the lungs and airways when examination supports antibiotic treatment.
  • Urinary tract infections: It helps remove susceptible bacteria from the urinary system and treat infection-related discomfort when prescribed.
  • Bacterial skin infections: It helps control bacteria causing infected skin and soft-tissue problems, including redness, swelling or discharge.
  • Dental infections: It helps treat bacterial infections involving teeth or surrounding tissues and may reduce infection-related pain and swelling.
  • Bone and joint infections: This combination can be used for susceptible infections in bones or joints under a clinician's supervision.

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The amoxycillin component stops susceptible bacteria from forming the protective cell wall they need to survive. The clavulanic acid component blocks resistance enzymes made by some bacteria, allowing amoxycillin to work against a wider range of susceptible bacteria. Together, they stop bacterial growth and help clear the infection.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Elmox CV suspension works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, probenecid can raise amoxycillin levels, blood thinners can alter clotting tests, allopurinol may increase rash risk, methotrexate toxicity may increase, and other antibiotics may change treatment choice.

Interactions with food items
