Medical Description

Duogen-Cypo tablet is a hormonal medicine used under medical supervision to manage polycystic ovary syndrome symptoms such as irregular periods, acne and excess hair growth. It contains a combination of cyproterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol. Cyproterone acetate reduces the effect of male hormones on hair follicles and skin, while ethinyl estradiol lowers male-hormone activity in the blood and supports more regular bleeding. The tablet is taken by mouth and must not be used during pregnancy.

  • Hormonal acne: Reduced male-hormone activity can lower hormone-related skin changes and help reduce new acne spots over time.

How does this medicine work?

The antiandrogen cyproterone acetate blocks the effect of male hormones on the skin and hair follicles, which can reduce unwanted hair growth and acne. The estrogen ethinyl estradiol lowers male-hormone activity in the blood and supports more regular menstrual cycles. Together, they address several hormone-related symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Duogen-Cypo tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, some epilepsy medicines and medicines for tuberculosis can increase hormone breakdown and make treatment less effective. Medicines for human immunodeficiency virus infection, hepatitis C or fungal infections may lower or raise hormone levels, so their effect needs review. Some medicines for high blood pressure, diabetes or blood clots may have altered effects when used with this combination. Herbal products containing St John's wort can reduce hormone levels and make treatment less effective.
