Medical Description

Drox Dry suspension is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections of the throat, ears, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. It contains cefadroxil, which stops bacteria from forming the protective cell wall needed for survival. The suspension is given by mouth and may be prescribed for children and other patients when a clinician confirms a suitable bacterial infection. It does not treat viral illnesses such as colds or flu, and the prescribed course should be completed even if symptoms improve.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or trying to conceive. Cefadroxil is generally considered suitable when prescribed, but human safety information is limited and the need for treatment should be assessed.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Cefadroxil is not expected to reach breast milk in harmful amounts, but watch the baby for diarrhoea, rash or feeding difficulties.

Driving

Driving

Drox Dry suspension does not usually affect alertness. Avoid driving if dizziness or an allergic reaction occurs.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Alcohol safety is not established with Drox Dry suspension. Ask your doctor before drinking alcohol during treatment.

Directions for Use

To prepare Drox Dry suspension, add only the supplied sterile water as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. Shake well before each use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack and do not drink directly from the bottle. It may be given with or without food; food may reduce stomach upset. Complete the prescribed course even when symptoms improve.

Storage and disposal

Store Drox Dry suspension as directed on the pack after preparation, away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep it out of the reach of children. Use prepared suspension only within the storage period provided by the pharmacist or pack. Dispose of leftover medicine as advised by a pharmacist.

Quick Tips

  • Give Drox Dry suspension only for the infection diagnosed by the doctor.
  • Shake the bottle thoroughly before measuring the suspension.
  • Use the supplied measuring device for accurate administration.
  • Never keep leftover antibiotic for a later illness.
  • Contact the doctor if diarrhoea becomes severe or contains blood.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, skin eruptions, low blood pressure, unusual heartbeat, muscle contractions or breathing difficulty. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The active ingredient cefadroxil stops susceptible bacteria from building the protective cell wall they need to survive. The weakened bacteria then die, helping the body clear the infection. This action does not work against viruses.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Drox Dry suspension works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell the doctor if you are due to receive a purified Vi polysaccharide typhoid vaccine or an inactivated cholera vaccine, so the vaccine schedule can be checked.

Interactions with food items

Drox Dry suspension may be given with or without food. Food may reduce nausea or stomach discomfort.
