Medical Description

Cosvate-GM Cream is a prescription medication used to treat a variety of inflammatory and infectious skin conditions, including eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and certain autoimmune-related skin diseases. It is a triple-combination cream containing clobetasol propionate (a potent corticosteroid that reduces redness, swelling, and itching), miconazole nitrate (an antifungal that combats fungal infections), and gentamicin (an antibiotic that prevents or treats bacterial infections).

This cream is not suitable for conditions such as acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, itching around the anus or genitals, infected or itchy skin without a doctor’s advice, or widespread plaque psoriasis. Incorrect use of Cosvate-GM may worsen the condition or cause unnecessary side effects.

Before applying Cosvate-GM, inform your doctor if you have a history of bone-related issues, allergies to steroids, broken or damaged skin, chronic leg ulcers, or psoriasis. This helps determine whether the cream is safe for you. Extra caution should be exercised when using the cream on sensitive areas like the face, underarms, or groin.

Cosvate-GM cream should be applied exactly as prescribed, usually in a thin layer over the affected area. Do not extend the duration of use beyond what is advised, and avoid covering the treated skin with tight bandages unless instructed by your doctor. Overuse of corticosteroid creams can lead to skin thinning or other long-term side effects.

Common side effects of Cosvate-GM include burning, irritation, redness, itching, or discomfort at the application site. These effects are typically mild and temporary, but if they persist or worsen, consult your doctor immediately. Use this cream with caution during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and only under strict medical supervision.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

  • During inflammation or infection of the skin, the body releases some chemical substances which make the skin red, itchy and swollen.
  • Clobetasol is a steroid which acts by blocking the synthesis of natural substances, i.e. prostaglandins, which are responsible for itching, swelling and redness.
  • Miconazole works by inhibiting the formation of a fungal cell wall component, which leads to altered permeability and growth of fungus, causing infection.
  • Gentamicin is an antibiotic agent which is widely used for treating various bacterial infections of the skin. It works by inhibiting the growth and multiplication of bacteria causing infection.
  • Collectively, all these medicines work more effectively by reducing the infection and inflammation of the skin.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Cosvate-GM cream is meant for local application on the skin and, thus, is less likely to interact with other medicines taken orally. However, it may interact with other topically applied medicine. Discuss with your doctor if you are already on another topical medicine.
  • There is limited information available on the interaction of Cosvate-GM cream with other medicines. However, as Cosvate-GM cream contains three different components, any interaction seen with these three components when taken alone may occur with this combination.
  • Be cautious if you are taking antifungal medicines like Itraconazole and Ritonavir, which are used in HIV infection, antibiotics such as erythromycin, and blood-thinning agents like warfarin and Verapamil used in heart problems.
