Medical Description

Cidbact tablet is an antibiotic used for certain bacterial infections of the throat, tonsils, ears, sinuses, urinary system, skin and soft tissues, and for some lung infections. It contains cefuroxime, a cephalosporin antibiotic. Cefuroxime blocks formation of the protective outer covering bacteria need to survive, so susceptible bacteria weaken and die. Cidbact tablet is taken by mouth as a whole with water and is used only as prescribed.

Uses

  • Chronic bronchitis flare-ups: When a doctor confirms a bacterial worsening, this medicine helps clear the infection and may ease increased cough or mucus.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, cefuroxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or a related penicillin antibiotic, do not use it without medical advice. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or a history of severe antibiotic-related diarrhoea.

Side effects

  • Nausea or vomiting: Cefuroxime can upset the stomach, especially early in treatment. Ask for medical help if vomiting prevents you from keeping the tablet down.
  • Diarrhoea: Antibiotic-related changes in bowel bacteria may loosen stools. Seek urgent care for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
  • Headache or dizziness: These effects may occur while your body adjusts. Avoid driving and seek advice if you feel faint or cannot stay alert.
  • Vaginal inflammation or thrush: Antibiotic treatment can allow fungal overgrowth, causing itching, soreness or discharge. Arrange medical care if symptoms develop.
  • Unpleasant taste or Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction: A bitter taste may occur, while fever, chills or worsening symptoms after treatment need prompt medical assessment.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or other harmful effects. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Cefuroxime prevents bacteria from building their protective outer cell wall. Without a strong cell wall, the bacteria become unstable, break down and die. Human cells do not have cell walls, so this action targets bacteria.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Cidbact tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, antacids and other acid-reducing medicines may lower absorption of oral cefuroxime, probenecid may raise cefuroxime levels, and severe vomiting or diarrhoea may reduce absorption of oral contraceptives. Tell your doctor about blood thinners and other antibiotics.
