Medical Description

Cavplan tablet is a combination antibiotic used to treat susceptible bacterial infections affecting areas such as the respiratory tract, ears, sinuses, teeth, skin and urinary system. It contains amoxycillin, which damages the bacterial protective covering, and clavulanic acid, which blocks bacterial enzymes that can weaken amoxycillin. Lactobacillus is included to help restore the balance of helpful intestinal bacteria disturbed by antibiotic treatment. Swallow Cavplan tablet whole with water, with food if advised, and use it only as prescribed.

Uses

  • Bacterial infections: Susceptible infections in the chest, ears, sinuses, teeth, skin or urinary tract can cause pain and inflammation; this antibiotic helps clear them when prescribed.
  • Digestive balance during antibiotic treatment: Lactobacillus may help restore helpful intestinal bacteria that antibiotic treatment can disturb.

Tell your doctor if you have had a serious reaction to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics, kidney disease, glandular fever or intestinal inflammation.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid may upset the stomach, especially without food. Seek advice if queasiness prevents eating or drinking.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much may cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain or seizures, especially in people with kidney disease. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Amoxycillin prevents susceptible bacteria from building their protective covering, so they cannot survive. Clavulanic acid blocks bacterial enzymes that can destroy amoxycillin, helping it remain active against certain resistant bacteria. Lactobacillus may help restore the balance of helpful intestinal bacteria.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Cavplan tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention warfarin and other blood thinners, which may increase bleeding, methotrexate, whose removal may be slowed, probenecid, which may raise amoxycillin levels, allopurinol, which may increase the risk of a rash, and oral contraceptives, whose reliability may be reduced if vomiting or severe diarrhea occurs.

Interactions with food items
