Medical Description

Benzonac mouth gel is used for short-term relief of pain, redness and swelling caused by mouth ulcers. It contains a combination of benzocaine, a local numbing medicine, and diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory pain medicine. The numbing ingredient benzocaine reduces pain signals at the sore, while diclofenac lowers the local chemical signals that contribute to pain, redness and swelling. The gel is applied inside the mouth to the affected area as advised and is intended for local mouth-ulcer care, not routine mouth cleansing.

Uses

  • Mouth ulcer pain: The numbing ingredient benzocaine eases pain from sores that can make eating, drinking or talking uncomfortable.
  • Redness and swelling around mouth ulcers: The anti-inflammatory ingredient diclofenac reduces local inflammation, helping settle the sore and improve comfort.
  • Mouth ulcer healing support: By easing local pain and inflammation, Benzonac mouth gel supports comfort while a minor ulcer heals.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Benzonac mouth gel. Do not use it if you have previously had a serious reaction to benzocaine, diclofenac, aspirin or similar anti-inflammatory pain medicines. Ask a doctor before use if an anti-inflammatory pain medicine has ever caused wheezing, facial swelling or breathing trouble.

Side effects

  • Burning sensation: The gel may briefly feel hot on an ulcer when it is first applied. Stop using it and ask a doctor if the burning is severe or lasts.
  • Stinging sensation: Inflamed mouth tissue may sting for a short time after contact with the gel. Get emergency medical help if swelling of the face, lips or throat or breathing difficulty develops.

Do not eat or drink immediately after application, and keep dentures or braces out for the period advised by your dentist or doctor. Avoid applying more often or in larger amounts than advised.

Dosage

Overdose

Using too much Benzonac mouth gel may cause excessive numbness or other unwanted effects. If you think you have used too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you miss an application, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one. Do not apply extra product to make up for it.

How does this medicine work?

The numbing ingredient benzocaine reduces pain signals from nerves at the treated sore, so the area feels less painful. The anti-inflammatory ingredient diclofenac lowers the body chemicals that contribute to pain, redness and swelling. Together, they provide local relief from discomfort caused by mouth ulcers.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Benzonac mouth gel works, although no specific interaction is established for this local gel. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention aspirin, other anti-inflammatory pain medicines, blood thinners and corticosteroids, as combined exposure may increase irritation or bleeding risk.

Interactions with food items

Spicy foods, acidic fruit drinks and very salty foods can sting the ulcer and worsen discomfort. Avoid them while the mouth is sore if they cause symptoms.
