Medical Description

Azam syrup is an antibiotic liquid used by mouth, including for children, to treat certain bacterial infections of the ear, throat, lungs, skin and soft tissues, urinary tract, digestive tract and genital tract. It contains azithromycin, which stops susceptible bacteria from making proteins needed for growth. This limits multiplication and helps the body clear the infection. Azam syrup is shaken and measured with the supplied device, and it may be used with or without food only as directed by a doctor.

Uses

  • Ear and throat infections: Azithromycin treats selected bacterial infections affecting the middle ear, tonsils or throat when prescribed.
  • Lung infections: Certain bacterial chest infections, including pneumonia, may respond when the bacteria are sensitive to this medicine.
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections: Selected bacterial infections affecting the skin or tissues beneath it may be treated under medical supervision.
  • Urinary, stomach and intestinal infections: Azam syrup may be prescribed for susceptible bacterial infections in these body areas.
  • Genital and other serious infections: Selected infections of the genital tract, blood, brain, bones or joints may require azithromycin after medical assessment.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Azithromycin may irritate the stomach and cause queasiness after use. Offer small sips of fluid and seek help if vomiting prevents drinking.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain or hearing changes. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Azithromycin prevents susceptible bacteria from making proteins needed for their growth and reproduction. This slows the spread of infection and allows the immune system to remove the bacteria. It works only against infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to it.
