Medical Description

Asthovil tablet is used to relieve airway narrowing in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and to help prevent symptoms linked to exercise or known triggers. It contains salbutamol, a bronchodilator that relaxes the muscles around the airways. This widens the breathing passages and makes it easier for air to move in and out of the lungs. Asthovil tablet is taken by mouth with or without food as prescribed, but it should not replace an emergency breathing plan or inhaler advised by your doctor.

Uses

  • Asthma: Narrowed airways can cause wheezing, cough, chest tightness and shortness of breath; salbutamol relaxes airway muscles to improve airflow.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: Persistent airway narrowing can make breathing difficult; this medicine helps open the airways and ease symptoms.
  • Exercise- or trigger-related symptoms: When prescribed for this purpose, salbutamol may help prevent symptoms brought on by exercise, dust, pollen, pets or smoke.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not take it. Tell your doctor before use if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid, diabetes, low potassium, kidney disease or a history of irregular heartbeats. Seek medical advice promptly if breathing becomes suddenly worse after taking it.

Side effects

  • Tremor: Salbutamol can briefly make the hands shake, often when treatment starts; sit safely and tell your doctor if shaking affects daily activities.
  • Headache: Changes in blood-vessel and muscle activity may cause head pain; seek advice if it is severe, sudden or persistent.
  • Fast heartbeat: Salbutamol may increase the heart rate; obtain urgent care for chest pain, fainting or a very uneven heartbeat.
  • Nervousness: Stimulation from salbutamol can make you feel restless or tense; tell your doctor if this interferes with sleep or daily activities.
  • Muscle cramps: Changes in muscle activity or potassium may cause cramps; report severe or repeated cramps, especially with weakness.

How does this medicine work?

Salbutamol relaxes the muscles surrounding the breathing tubes. The tubes widen, reducing resistance to airflow and making it easier to breathe.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Asthovil tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, beta blockers such as propranolol, timolol, pindolol and levobunolol can reduce salbutamol's effect or worsen airway narrowing. Water tablets and steroid medicines can lower potassium further, while other airway-opening or stimulant medicines may increase tremor or fast heartbeat.
