Medical Description

Asthalin 4 Tablet relieves wheezing, chest tightness, breathlessness and cough caused by narrowing of the airways in bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It contains salbutamol, a short-acting beta-2 agonist that relaxes the muscle around the small airways so they widen and air moves more freely into the lungs.

It relieves symptoms but does not treat the underlying airway inflammation, so any preventer inhaler your doctor has prescribed must be continued even on days you feel well. Tablets act too slowly to stop a sudden attack; keep your rescue inhaler within reach and seek emergency care if breathing becomes severely difficult.

Take it with or without food, exactly as prescribed and at the same time each day, and do not stop without medical advice. Needing it more often than before signals that your lung condition is worsening and needs medical review.

A fine trembling of the hands, headache, a faster heartbeat and muscle cramps occur because salbutamol also acts on receptors in the heart and skeletal muscle. These effects are usually mild and ease within the first few days. Seek prompt medical advice if you develop chest pain, an irregular heartbeat or severe dizziness.

Before starting, tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, an overactive thyroid, diabetes or low blood potassium, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid driving if you feel shaky or dizzy. Stopping smoking and avoiding dust, smoke and other triggers will improve your control.

  • You may experience chest pain or breathing problem during the treatment. You should consult your doctor immediately, it can be an underlying heart disorder.
  • You feel that Asthalin Tablet is less effective and not able to give you relief, but you should not increase the dose on your own. Seek medical help immediately.
  • You experience allergic reactions like hives, itching, swelling, etc. during the treatment.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
  • It may be taken with or without food.
  • Do not crush or chew the tablet unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Do not take more than the prescribed dose, even if your breathing feels worse.
  • Do not use this medicine as a substitute for your rescue inhaler during a sudden attack.

Storage and disposal

  • Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
  • Store it below 25°C in a dry place.
  • Do not take this medicine after the expiry date which is mentioned in the medicine.

Quick Tips

  • Asthalin 4 Tablet relieves breathlessness and wheezing by relaxing the muscles around your airways; it does not treat the underlying inflammation, so any preventer medicine must be continued.
  • Never use this tablet as a rescue treatment during a sudden attack. Keep your reliever inhaler with you at all times.
  • Mild trembling of the hands and a slightly faster heartbeat are common in the first few days and usually settle on their own.
  • Cutting down on tea, coffee, cola and energy drinks noticeably reduces tremor, restlessness and palpitations.
  • Tell your doctor if you find yourself needing this medicine more often than before, as this signals worsening disease.
  • If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar more frequently, as this medicine can raise glucose levels.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking water tablets, steroids or theophylline, since these can lower potassium further.
  • Do not take a non-selective beta-blocker such as propranolol without telling your doctor you are on this medicine.
  • Identify and avoid your triggers, whether dust, smoke, pollen, cold air or strong fumes, and stop smoking completely.
  • Attend regular reviews so your doctor can check your lung function and adjust treatment as needed.

Dosage

Overdose

Overdose of Asthalin may lead to a low level of potassium which may cause muscle spasm and weakness, nausea, vomiting, fast heartbeat, fits, etc. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine and notice such symptoms, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed taking any dose, take it as soon as you recall it. However, if the next dose is imminent, then skip the missed dose and continue with the next dose. Do not take an extra dose to compensate for the missed dose.

How does this medicine work?

  • Asthalin 4 Tablet contains salbutamol, a selective beta-2 adrenergic agonist. It binds to beta-2 receptors on the smooth muscle that encircles the airways, triggering a chain of signals within those cells that relaxes them.
  • As the muscle bands loosen, the narrowed airways widen, resistance to airflow falls, and air moves in and out of the lungs far more easily. This relieves wheezing, chest tightness, and breathlessness within a short time of taking the dose.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interactions.
  • Sometimes Asthalin Tablet may affect the way other medicines work and other medicines may affect how this medicine works if taken at the same time. Especially, if you are taking antihypertensives like water pills, medicines used for brain-related disorders, medicines for heart-related problems like digoxin, etc.
  • Concomitant use with anti-asthmatic medicines like theophylline and steroids along with Asthalin Tablet can cause a low level of potassium in the blood.

Interactions with food items

  • Asthalin 4 Tablet can be taken with or without food. Taking it after a meal may help if the medicine upsets your stomach, and no particular food needs to be avoided.
  • Caffeine deserves attention. Tea, coffee, cola, chocolate and energy drinks act on the body in a similar way to this medicine and can noticeably worsen trembling, restlessness, sleep disturbance and palpitations. Reducing caffeine often makes these effects much easier to tolerate.
  • If you have diabetes, keep your meal pattern regular and check your blood sugar more often when starting treatment, since this medicine can raise glucose levels.
  • A diet containing potassium-rich foods such as bananas, coconut water, citrus fruits and leafy vegetables may be suggested by your doctor if your potassium tends to run low, particularly when you are also on diuretics or steroids.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Asthalin 4 Tablet is used to relieve and prevent breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness and cough caused by reversible narrowing of the airways. It is prescribed in asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and other long-term lung conditions in which the airway muscles tighten and restrict the flow of air.
Taken by mouth, Asthalin 4 Tablet usually begins to open up the airways within about 30 minutes, and the effect generally lasts for four to six hours. Inhalers act far more quickly than tablets, which is why your doctor will still ask you to keep a reliever inhaler for sudden attacks.
No. Asthalin 4 Tablet must never be used as a rescue treatment during a sudden attack. Tablets are absorbed too slowly to help in an emergency. Always carry the reliever inhaler your doctor has prescribed and seek urgent medical help if your breathing does not improve.
A fine trembling of the hands is the most common and best-recognised effect of this medicine. It happens because the drug also stimulates receptors in skeletal muscle. The tremor is usually mild, tends to settle as your body adjusts over a few days, and is not a sign of damage. Tell your doctor if it interferes with daily activities.
Some people notice a faster or more forceful heartbeat, particularly when starting treatment or at higher doses. This is usually harmless and temporary. However, if you develop a persistently racing heart, an irregular beat, or chest pain, contact your doctor promptly.
No. Asthalin 4 Tablet is not a steroid. It is a short-acting beta-2 agonist, a type of bronchodilator that relaxes the muscle bands wrapped around your airways. Steroids work differently, by reducing inflammation and swelling inside the airway lining, and the two are often prescribed together.
No, Asthalin 4 Tablet does not cause addiction or dependence. However, needing it more and more often is an important warning sign that your underlying asthma or lung disease is not properly controlled, and you should see your doctor for a review of your treatment.
You can, but be aware that caffeine in tea, coffee, cola and energy drinks can add to the trembling, restlessness and palpitations caused by this medicine. If you find these effects troublesome, cutting back on caffeinated drinks often helps considerably.
It can. Beta-2 agonists may raise blood glucose and lower blood potassium, especially at higher doses or when combined with water tablets, steroids or theophylline. If you have diabetes, monitor your sugar more closely, and tell your doctor if you develop muscle weakness or cramps.
Inform your doctor if you have an overactive thyroid, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, an irregular heartbeat, low blood potassium, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Also mention every other medicine you take, particularly medicines for the heart or blood pressure.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If your next scheduled dose is almost due, leave out the forgotten one and carry on as usual. Never take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Do not stop on your own. Your doctor decides how long you need this medicine based on how well your lungs are working. Stopping suddenly can allow symptoms to return, and if you are also on a preventer medicine, that must be continued regardless of how well you feel.
