Medical Description

Ampicillin (jagsonpal) suspension is an antibiotic used for certain bacterial infections, including typhoid fever caused by susceptible Salmonella bacteria. Its active ingredient is ampicillin, a penicillin antibiotic that works by stopping bacteria from building the protective cell wall they need to survive. By weakening this wall, ampicillin helps clear the infection, but it does not work against viral illnesses such as colds or flu. This suspension is taken by mouth, including by children when prescribed, and the powder must be prepared and measured as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Use it only for the infection for which it was prescribed, even if symptoms improve.

Uses

  • Bacterial infections: Treats susceptible bacterial infections when a clinician has confirmed that an antibiotic is appropriate, but it does not work for colds or flu caused by viruses.
  • Typhoid fever: Helps clear Salmonella typhi infection, which can cause prolonged fever, headache, stomach pain, vomiting, loose stools and weakness.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, penicillins or related cephalosporin antibiotics, do not use it. Tell the doctor if you have previously had a severe reaction to an antibiotic, because another penicillin may not be suitable.

Side effects

  • Diarrhoea: The antibiotic can alter normal bowel bacteria, causing loose stools. Give the child fluids and seek medical help for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
  • Abdominal pain: Irritation of the digestive tract may cause cramping or tummy discomfort. Contact the child's doctor if pain is severe or does not settle.
  • Headache: Some children may develop head pain while the infection or treatment is settling. Tell the doctor if it is severe, persistent or accompanied by unusual drowsiness.
  • Nausea: The suspension can upset the stomach and make a child feel sick. Offer small sips of fluid and seek advice if vomiting prevents drinking.
  • Allergic reaction: A rash, hives or itching may appear after ampicillin. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Ampicillin should be used only when the doctor considers it appropriate.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Ampicillin can pass into breast milk in small amounts. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding, especially if the baby develops diarrhoea, rash or unusual irritability.

Driving

Driving

This suspension is not usually expected to affect driving, but avoid driving if you feel dizzy or unwell.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific alcohol interaction is established, but avoid alcohol if it worsens stomach upset or makes you feel unwell.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. If the powder requires preparation, add the specified sterile water as directed on the pack or by the pharmacist, then shake thoroughly. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack and do not drink from the bottle. Give this medicine by mouth exactly as prescribed. It may work best on an empty stomach, but give it with food if the doctor advises this because of stomach upset. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor changes it.

Storage and disposal

Store the prepared suspension in a cool place with the cap tightly closed. Do not freeze it. Use it within 30 days of opening, or for the shorter period stated by the pharmacist or on the pack. Keep it out of reach of children, and discard any remaining suspension instead of saving it for another illness.

Quick Tips

  • Use the measuring device supplied with the pack so the child receives the prescribed amount.
  • Shake Ampicillin suspension well before every use.
  • Do not use it for a cold, flu or another illness caused by a virus.
  • Give plenty of suitable fluids if diarrhoea occurs, and seek advice if it is severe or persistent.
  • Do not share leftover antibiotic suspension with another person or keep it for future illness.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The active ingredient, ampicillin, blocks the bacterial process that builds the cell wall surrounding the germ. Without a strong cell wall, susceptible bacteria break down and die, helping the infection clear. It does not work against viruses such as colds or flu.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Ampicillin suspension works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention the purified Vi polysaccharide typhoid vaccine, inactivated cholera vaccine, methotrexate, acenocoumarol and phenindione. Your doctor or pharmacist can check vaccine timing and monitor for methotrexate toxicity or increased anticoagulant effect and bleeding.

Interactions with food items

Food may reduce or delay absorption. Give it on an empty stomach when advised, but a small amount of food may be used if stomach upset occurs and the doctor permits it.
