Medical Description
Amlokind-AT Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure and prevent the chest pain of angina in adults not adequately controlled by a single medicine. It contains amlodipine and atenolol, which act on opposite ends of the problem.
Amlodipine blocks calcium entry into artery wall muscle, relaxing and widening the arteries so the heart pumps against less resistance. Atenolol blocks beta-1 receptors in the heart, slowing the rate and reducing the force of each beat so the heart needs less oxygen.
The pairing is complementary: amlodipine alone can provoke a reflex rise in heart rate, which atenolol prevents, while atenolol alone leaves arteries relatively constricted, which amlodipine relieves.
Ankle swelling and flushing come from the amlodipine, while tiredness, cold hands and feet and a slower pulse come from the atenolol. Never stop suddenly, as rebound high blood pressure, severe angina or a heart attack can follow.
This medicine is generally unsuitable if you have asthma, and it masks the warning signs of low blood sugar in diabetes. Tell your doctor about any breathing problem, slow heart rate or heart failure before starting.

Quick Tips
- Amlokind-AT Tablet widens your arteries and slows your heart, tackling blood pressure from both directions.
- Never stop this medicine suddenly; rebound high blood pressure, severe angina or a heart attack can follow.
- Tell your doctor immediately about any wheezing or breathlessness, as this medicine is unsuitable for asthma.
- If you have diabetes, check your sugar more often, as the usual warning signs of a hypo are masked.
- Ankle swelling comes from the amlodipine; raise your legs when sitting rather than expecting a water tablet to help.
- Cold hands and feet are common; gloves, warm socks and stopping smoking all help.
- Check your pulse occasionally and report a resting rate below about fifty beats a minute.
- Tiredness is common early on and usually improves over the first weeks.
- Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice entirely.
- Tell your doctor if you take simvastatin, as the dose may need capping.
- Tell any anaesthetist or surgeon that you take a beta-blocker before any procedure.
- Reduce salt, limit alcohol, stay active and monitor your blood pressure regularly.

How does this medicine work?
- Amlokind At Tablet works by the combined action of Atenolol & Amlodipine.
- Atenolol works by blocking the certain natural chemicals in your body, like epinephrine, to the heart and blood vessels which ultimately helps in lowering heart rate, blood pressure and strain on the heart.
- Amlodipine works by relaxing and widening the blood vessels, thereby facilitating blood circulation and lowering blood pressure.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Amlokind At Tablet is a combination of two medicines and there is no sufficient information available on the interaction of this combination with other medicines. Any interaction which is seen with amlodipine or telmisartan can happen with this combination too.
- Always inform your doctor about all the medicines you are taking, that includes all prescribed or non-prescribed herbal medicines, dietary supplements as well as other treatment if you are taking for any disorders.
- In particular, if you are taking medicines like immunosuppressants (such as ciclosporin), medicines for heart and brain-related disorders, muscle relaxants, cholesterol-lowering medicines, etc.
- You may experience an excess drop in blood pressure if you are taking any other blood pressure-lowering medicines, antifungal medicines and antibiotics with this medicine.
Interactions with food items
- Amlokind-AT Tablet may be taken with or without food. Choose a consistent time each day, as steady dosing gives steadier blood pressure control.
- Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, which raise amlodipine levels and can cause marked dizziness and low blood pressure.
- Reduce salt, which raises blood pressure directly. Limit pickles, papads, packaged snacks, processed foods and added table salt.
- Limit alcohol, which adds to dizziness in the short term and raises blood pressure with regular use.
- If you have diabetes, keep meals regular and check your blood sugar more often, since the warning signs of a hypo are blunted by the atenolol component.
- Raising your legs when sitting helps ankle swelling more than any dietary measure; a water tablet is usually not the answer.
