Medical Description

Agoprex is a prescription medication. It is an antidepressant medication. The active component of Agoprex is called Agomelatine. Depression is a medical condition characterised by low mood. Patients present with complaints like feeling low, decreased motivation, feelings of hopelessness and dread, loss of interest in daily activities, and irregular sleep (difficulty in falling asleep or waking up, disturbed sleep), which can severely affect daily life. Multiple brain pathways and chemical messengers are indicated in depression. Antidepressant medications target these pathways and neurotransmitters to help relieve the symptoms of depression. Agomelatine is an antidepressant that acts on a specific neurotransmitter called Melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that is indicated in the regulation of Circadian rhythms (24-hour internal cycle) and sleep-wake cycle. The medication should be taken as recommended by the doctor. It should not be abruptly started or stopped. Taking the tablet at the same time every day is advisable for maximum efficacy.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Agomelatine is an atypical antidepressant. It acts by increasing the effect of Melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that is indicated in the regulation of Circadian rhythms (24-hour internal cycle) and sleep-wake cycle. In addition to this, Agomelatine also increases the activity of Nor-epinephrine and dopamine, two neurotransmitters that are considered deficient/deranged in depression.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • The concomitant use with medications like fluvoxamine, ciprofloxacin, and oestrogen is contraindicated, as these medicines inhibit the enzyme that metabolises Agomelatine, thereby increasing its exposure by several times. This produces undesirable effects.
  • This medication should not be taken with Rifampicin as it decreases the effect of Agoprex.

Interactions with food items

  • This medication does not have any known interaction with food items.
